The last days of the year can be counted on one hand. The weather beats capers again. Until the turn of the year, first humid, then extremely mild high pressure weather is expected. “On New Year’s Eve, 14 to 16 degrees are quite possible,” said Klaus Marquardt (47) from Meteonews to Blick. The temperatures had “nothing to do with winter in the back or front”.
Even on Tuesday it is often cloudy, humid and mild. There is a lot of rain on Wednesday – with the first meltwater of winter! Its getting warmer and warmer. The snowfall line retreats to up to 2800 meters in the west and up to 2500 meters in the east. That means rain on ski slopes.
The large amounts of precipitation on Wednesday come with a warm front. Switzerland not only reaches very humid air, but also increasingly milder air in bursts. A very delicate combination at this time of year, as Meteonews warns.
High avalanche danger
Not only streams rise, but also the danger of avalanches. Due to the heavy rain, the snow cover is soaked far up. The avalanche bulletin already warns for Tuesday of a “significant increase in the avalanche danger”. This will increase in the coming days.
Snow will soak up like a sponge, but then with the mixture of rain and meltwater it will make the stream levels rise. The avalanche danger continues to rise, warning level 4 (high) is likely to be reached in some areas. The risk of landslides and mudslides is also increasing.
On Thursday the weather will gradually calm down. 14 degrees are expected in Zurich and 10 in Sion. The new year begins in the lowlands with calm, high-pressure weather and temperatures just under double digits. (kes)
