Higher price, few offers: e-cars are not in demand as rental cars

E-cars are not in demand as rental cars

Although the number of registrations of e-cars within Europe has risen sharply in the past year, rentals of such vehicles are still the exception rather than the rule, reports Billiger-Mietwagen.de. However, the reasons for this are understandable.

According to the booking platform Billiger-Mietwagen.de, the proportion of electric cars in car rentals in Europe is still very small: “The proportion of all bookings is 0.22 percent,” the company said. In the past twelve months, customers have only booked around 2,500 electric rental car days via the platform – 77 percent of them in Spain, 10 percent in France and 2 percent in Germany.

“Preference is given to booking combustion engines, as they are increasingly available from the providers and the modalities of refueling are familiar worldwide”. In the USA, Spain and Germany there is now a good range of battery-powered rental cars, but the rental is usually more expensive than that of a petrol or diesel vehicle, said Billiger-Mietwagen spokesman Frieder Bechtel. And many vacationers would not want to look for charging stations and put up with long charging times.

Mallorca leads the demand ranking

The demand is still highest in Mallorca. The Balearic Islands have done a lot to expand the charging infrastructure: there are reserved parking spaces at attractive tourist destinations, such as in front of a museum or at the town hall, where electric cars can charge for free. The number of cars on the island of Formentera is limited – but electric cars are exempt from the quota.

According to the holiday home search engine Holidu, “only 0.3 percent of holiday accommodations in Europe offer charging options for electric vehicles”. In Gothenburg, Munich and Eindhoven, around 3 percent of the holiday homes have a charging station. On the Dutch coast, 1 percent of the accommodations have a charging station in the immediate vicinity, and 0.4 percent on Lake Como. The data came from the Holidu database with a good 15 million accommodations worldwide.
