Highlight on Friday – hurricane storm with over 170 km/h hits Tyrol

Over 170 km/h at altitude and 100 km/h in the valleys: our state is currently being hit by the strongest foehn storm in the past three years. In the evening the spook is almost over again.

The foehn was already announced on Thursday, it picked up speed during the night, and on Friday it shows its merciless side: GeoSphere Austria has issued an orange wind warning (level three out of four) for Friday, Nikolas Zimmermann from the weather service UBIMET is expected a Foehn storm, “the kind that only hits the country every three to four years.” These are the hotspots “The hotspots will be the main Alpine ridge, the area around Nauders, the Stubai Alps and the greater Innsbruck area with the Wipptal,” predicts the meteorologist. The Zillertal region will also be hit hard. Although it is the well-known southern foehn, the northern Alps will also be hit – albeit a little less hard. For example, in Ehrwald or Leutasch you have to “fasten your seatbelt”. However, things are likely to be quieter in the Kufstein area, in the Kaiserwinkel and north of the Kitzbühel Alps. Peak by midday The peak of the storm is expected in the afternoon. At Patscherkofel, GeoSphere Austria recorded wind peaks of up to 170 km/h in the morning. In the valleys, speeds of 100 km/h can be expected – including in the state capital. At the same time, temperatures are rising to remarkable heights. “They climb to 23 degrees – tending to be in the lowlands.” South of the state capital, the famous “Föhnmauer” of clouds will rise. This time, the impressive weather phenomenon is a little different than usual. “It will probably extend quite far to the north to the Serles and the Patscherkofel,” says the UBIMET meteorologist.Rain from the west in the afternoonIn the afternoon, some rain will set in from the west, and the foehn calms down hesitantly towards the evening. “Saturday will start with only a slight foehn, and the sun will appear at times – especially in the morning. Overall, it will be changeable, with some rain,” predicts the expert.
