Hikeable Styria – the view from the Rosenkogel amazes hikers

Today’s hiking tip leads to the Rosenkogel: A circular hike also for families on the sunny side of the Seckauer Tauern – including a wooden chapel steeped in history.

The Rosenkogel and the Almkapelle Maria Loretto are two popular hiking destinations in the Murtal region, which can be easily reached in summer via the access road (closed in winter) to the Sommertörl. The easy terrain, the fantastic 360° view from the Rosenkogel and the historic wooden chapel Maria Loretto convince young and old – so it is not surprising that there is a lot of hiking activity here on beautiful summer days. The view from the 1918 m high Rosenkogel ranges from the Seetal Alps and the Gurktal Alps to the Wölzer Tauern. We start at the Sommertörl (1644 m) and follow the yellow signposts in the direction of the Rosenkogel (path number 988). The first section leads along a wide gravel road until we see the start of the hiking trail at a crossroads. We follow the trail uphill through the forest to the alpine pastures with great views, where the Loretto chapel can already be seen in the distance. It’s a leisurely climb across the meadows to the gravel road, which we follow to the right and via which we reach the Maria Loretto chapel (1817 m) a little later. After a short break, we hike around the chapel and follow the trail that leads more or less in one line to the summit of the Rosenkogel (1918 m). Hiking data: 4 km, 270 m ascent, walking time approx. 1:45 h. Requirements: Well-marked and easy trail to the chapel. In the summit area of the Rosenkogel, poor visibility can lead to orientation difficulties. Starting point: Sommertörl car park can be reached via a gravel road. Refreshments: summer hut – is below the parking lot and is open until the end of September on weekends. Questions and suggestions: WEGES – Silvia and Elisabeth, www.weg-es.at; Facebook, Instagram and YouTube: wegesaktiv. In the extensive summit area we see the trail and follow the hiking trail 988A – in between also a bit steeper – through the forest to the well-known crossroads at the alpine pastures with great views. The way back is now via the ascent route. We recommend a detour to the summer hut. “Steirerkrone” tip: brass band meeting at Sommertörl on Sunday, August 28, 2022.
