Hiking in autumn: tips for the next tour

Picturesque backdrops, fresh air and fewer tourists: autumn is perfect for mountaineering and hiking. However, anyone who has previously gone on their tours primarily in the summer should take a few things into consideration before their first autumn trip to the mountains. From appropriate clothing to hut opening times and snow lines, this is advice you should follow.

The early bird catches the worm

Unlike summer, the days are shorter in autumn and winter. If you want to go on a beautiful hiking route, you should set off early in the morning. Far too often, hikers and mountaineers are surprised by the early darkness in autumn and then have problems returning to the valley. Here it is important to find out about the sunset time before setting off and, if necessary, to have a headlamp or flashlight with you.

The right clothing

In autumn, not only do temperatures drop, but precipitation also increases. That’s why it’s best to dress in layers. These should preferably be made of functional materials that are moisture-repellent and breathable. A waterproof or repellent rain jacket and rain pants are also recommended, as umbrellas are extremely impractical when hiking. If a cold wind is blowing, a headband or hat is also beneficial to protect the ears from the cold.

Last but not least, footwear is particularly important in autumn. Gore-Tex or similar materials ensure dry feet. A decent tread is also important so that you have grip on uneven roads.

Follow the weather forecast closely

While it is advisable in spring and summer to study the weather forecast before setting off, in autumn it is important to also find out about the snowfall line. This tends to drop to below 1,000 meters in the autumn months, but hikers and mountaineers are still often surprised by snow. Accordingly, you should adjust your clothing and equipment before starting a tour and, if necessary, change the route to avoid the snow.

The higher, the more demanding

If you plan to complete a high alpine tour, you should prepare properly in the fall. Not only is appropriate equipment required here, physical fitness is also a must. If you go uphill in the colder months, you should definitely have gaiters and crampons in your backpack. Experience on difficult paths should be a requirement. In addition, it is even more important here than usual not to climb alone, but in pairs or, at best, in a group.

Pack enough provisions

If you go to the mountains from October onwards, you should pack your own snack and drinks. Because most huts close their doors at the end of September at the end of the season. If you are unsure about opening times, you should check them online before your trip. If there is no information online, it is advisable to pack enough provisions yourself so that you are not tormented by a growling stomach during the hike.
