The extramarital affair between ex-US President Bill Clinton (73) and Monica Lewinsky (46), an intern in the White House, caused a tangible scandal in the mid-1990s. In 1998 Clinton had to go through impeachment proceedings, but was acquitted. Now the affair comes into focus again. Because in a new documentary about Hillary Clinton (72), the affair of her husband is also addressed. That was "hard" for the US presidential candidate from 2016, as she told Ellen DeGeneres (62) on her talk show.
"Bravest decision I've ever made"
There were no taboo subjects in the four-part documentary, which will be shown by the US streaming service Hulu from March. As Hillary Clinton explains on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, it would have made little sense to make a film about her life without addressing the Lewinsky affair. After all, it is something that everyone knows and about which everyone has an opinion. So the Clinton couple answered their questions.
Hillary Clinton calls it "the bravest personal decision I've ever made" that she didn't leave her husband at the time. Opening the affair chapter again was "undoubtedly a bit difficult". It "drained her emotionally" to go through this again. However, Clinton hopes that "my willingness to address all of this will really help other people."
In addition, the now 72-year-old describes the two facets of the affair. A number of women in the documentary say that they were "really upset" that they had not left their husbands at the time and were therefore unable to support their political ambitions. Many of the people said in the same breath that they loved Bill Clinton. She understand that, she also loves him. But Hillary Clinton says: "People need to think more carefully about decisions for their own lives." However they turn out, you should accept them in a friendlier and more supportive manner.
