his new title is already making waves

fun, news, tips… what else?

Will William give up his new title of Prince of Wales? Many Welsh are demanding a consultation, humiliated by a tradition that has been carried on for centuries.

Could the death of Queen Elizabeth II plunge the Crown into chaos? While the succession is already confirmed, since his son Prince Charles reclaims the throne under the name of Charles III, the new title of his son Prince William causes tumults. Indeed, like his father from 1958 to today, and since he is his eldest son, the latter in turn becomes the prince of wales and his wife Kate Middleton the Princess of Wales. Moreover, on the occasion of his very first televised speech, the one whose worried health had referred to this transition: “Today I am proud to make him Prince of Wales, the country whose title I have been privileged to bear for so much of my life and duty” recalled Charles III. But this timeless tradition is not more really to the taste of a few dozen Welsh

The reason ? Neither Charles nor William has any close connection to Wales. At least they are not from there. This is howa petition has been launched on the change.org website for “end this title out of respect for their history”. “The title remains an insult to Wales and is a symbol of historic oppression. The title implies that Wales is still a principality, undermining Wales’ status as a nation and a country.”can we read on the said web page intended for the already numerous signatories.

To fully understand, it is necessary to remember that Wales is a nation that is part of the United Kingdom but that it has a National Assembly that can pass laws since 2011. On the other hand, the Welsh flag does not appear on Union Jack!

Already nearly 30,000 signatories!

Qualified for “cad” for his behavior vis-à-vis his wife a few days ago, will William be faced with new pressures even though tensions are still very high with his little brother Harry? To defend their point of view, the authors of the petition point out that the last Prince of Wales who was Welsh by birth is none other than Llywelyn the Last. We have to go back to 1282! Shot by the English, he had been decapitated and his head had been “walked through the streets of London and placed on a tip of the Tower of London”. This is why the insurgents demand that the honorary title no longer be transmitted “just out of habit and without thinking”and to stop “to perpetuate this tradition which sounds like a humiliation” for their country.

Launched a week ago, the petition now has nearly 28,000 signatories. The change.org site specifies that after 35,000, it will become one of the most signed in its history.
