Struggling Ajax experiences a terrible 0:6 debacle

Ajax against Feyenoord, the classic has electrified Dutch football fans for more than a century. But the record champions from Amsterdam are in a deep sporting crisis. Now there is another chapter: The “Klassieker” defeat has historical dimensions.

The crisis-plagued Dutch football record champions Ajax Amsterdam have now also experienced a sporting disaster following personnel quarrels at management level. Ajax suffered a 0:6 (0:3) defeat at champions Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch “Klassieker” and slipped to sixth place in the table. Igor Paixao (34th minute/66th), Yankuba Minteh (35th/56th), Dávid Hancko (45th+2) and Quinten Timber (62nd) caused Ajax’s heaviest defeat in this prestigious and explosive duel.

For Amsterdam it was the second bitter defeat against Feyenoord this season, as the scandalous first leg was lost 4-0. Last September, the game in Amsterdam, which was played on a Sunday, was canceled due to riots by Ajax fans, even though away fans were not allowed in at all. The game continued the following Wednesday without spectators. A good five months earlier there had been a half-hour interruption in the game after a throwing attack on the then Ajax professional Davy Klassen.

Ajax parted ways with coach Maurice Steijn last October after a disastrous start to the season. Interim coach John van’t Schip, who led Ajax back to the top, recently announced he would be leaving after the season. Last September, German football director Sven Mislintat had to leave. Ajax also separated from its managing director and chairman Alex Kroes on Tuesday. The supervisory board accuses 50 years of insider trading in Ajax shares.
