Warner seems to be going all-in on Hogwarts Legacy 2 after the huge success of the first installment last year and the abysmal flop of Suicide Squad. For the best?
This is in any case what the financial director of Warner Bros., who naturally still plays the role of publisher of the games under its supervision such as Hogwarts Legacy 2, has put forward. A reassuring awareness for this anticipated sequel, or should we expect major, more or less magical facelifts at Hogwarts?
Hogwarts Legacy 2: Warner Bros. Games’ savior?
Initially released in February 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, then over time on other platforms, Hogwarts Legacy first of the name was one of the biggest hits of last year. By the end of 2023, the title from Avalanche Studios published by Warner Bros. Games had exceeded 22 million copies sold. Warner therefore had its best-seller there. Unfortunately, 2024 was a completely different story, with a Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in the form of a game-service considered one of the biggest commercial failures of the video game industry of the year. Rocksteady’s title cost its publisher a lot of money, with a non-existent return on investment.
Given these numbers, Warner Bros. CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said in an interview that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is ” one of Warner’s biggest priorities in the coming years ” The group therefore has high hopes for this sequel to boost its growth, which took a serious hit with Suicide Squad.
Do we take the same chopsticks and start again?
But will Hogwarts Legacy 2 be a true sequel, or will it undergo major changes? Last March, the CEO of Warner Bros. Games toyed with the idea (a bit suicidal?) of making it a service game, believing that it would be a “strategic investment”. In light of the disastrous results of its service game Suicide Squad and, even worse, of Concord on the Sony side, is this strategy still relevant?
It’s clearly still too early to tell, with Hogwarts Legacy 2 not expected for a few years. In the meantime, fans of the wizarding world can indulge in its iconic sport with Quidditch Champions… which has however had a rather lukewarm reception since its release on September 3.
