The gameplay trailer broadcast during State of Play this Thursday, March 17, 2022 was an opportunity for many fans to find out what will probably be the best Harry Potter game of all time. We then understood the scenario of the RPG in the open world, fight scenes, cutscenes, the concoction of potions, the villains of the story or even fantastic animals and, even if Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy takes place long before books and movies (more than 100 years before), some characters you know very well will be there!
Nearly Headless Nick Ghost
He’s probably one of the most iconic characters from the Harry Potter books and movies, so you’ve most likely spotted him yourself in the trailer. Its design is faithful to the film adaptation and, to return a little to its history, know that Nick died in 1492, centuries before the game! His death is also a bit gloomy since it was by making a magical mistake at the court of Henry 7 that he was executed. Unfortunately, his executioner did not cut off the head properly and it remained attached to his inert body. This obviously earned him his current pseudonym.
Now he is the regular ghost of Gryffindor house and that’s why it would also make sense to see the other ghosts in Hogwarts Legacy: the Bloody Baron for Slytherin, the Fat Monk for Hufflepuff and the Gray Lady for Ravenclaw.
Peeves, the incorrigible ghost
In the books, this one-man poltergeist very bad reputation at Hogwarts. An incorrigible troublemaker, he spends his days and nights haunting the school looking for the slightest nonsense to terrorize the students (especially the first years). Sneaky and irredeemably mean-spirited, Peeves enjoys throwing chalk at them, making noise, disrupting classes, unscrewing chandeliers, and much more. He only has respect for Albus Dumbledore and only the Bloody Baron sometimes manages to overpower him.
It is therefore interesting to see how Peeves will be unbearable in Hogwarts Legacy and if it will be necessary to initiate fights against him in order to get rid of him. There will probably be phases of infiltration to avoid being spotted.
Professor Binns
Another ghost? Yes but not just any! We don’t know if it’s an ancestor or Binns himself (his date of birth and death being a little fuzzy), but the features shown in the trailer match. Mr. Binns, Professor of History of Magic at Hogwarts, is renowned for its boring classes he lacks so much energy and passion. It is also said that he is simply dead, asleep, in the teachers’ room and that he did not realize his ghostly state that day.
Present in the books, we know that he taught at the time of Harry Potter but also of his parents. It remains to be seen whether his classes in Hogwarts Legacy will be really boring!
The Fat Lady
We’re not sure how long the painting of the Fat Lady has been around at Hogwarts (the information dates back to 1975 at the farthest point in the books) but the portrait we see in the trailer looks just like her. We actually see the protagonist (5th year student at Gryffindor) approaching the painting and there is no doubt that it is a question here of the entrance to the Gryffindor common room.
Will Caput Draconis or Fortuna Major be the password to use to access the dormitories?
Ollivander’s ancestor
This is already the second time that Ollivander has been mentioned in Hogwarts Legacy communication. We had a very telling image on the official site in 2020 showing the manager of a chopstick shop called “Ollivanders”. In the recent trailer, we can see the front of this shop directly at Hogsmeade (and not at Diagon Alley). Of course, the famous Garrick Ollivander that we know from films and books was not yet born in 1890. On the other hand, it is very clearly his ancestor and grandfather Gerbold Octavius Ollivander.
Bonus: Merlin, Albus Dumbledore and Weasley twins
The game taking place from September 1, 1890, it is possible that we will attend the return to Hogwarts fromAlbus Dumbledore in 1892. It remains to be seen now if the game will allow us to carry out the 6th and 7th year of schooling or if we will have to wait for the next games. Anyway, it may be that at the bend of a side quest we meet the young Albus.
And if Dumbledore is considered one of the greatest magicians of all time, then obviously the same goes for Merlin, known since the Middle Ages by all wizards and even Muggles. His life is fascinating but we will dwell on an essential point: he has studied Ancient Magic a lot and has even carried out investigations concerning the 5 Cursed Cellars of Hogwarts. So far, no one has found them and it could well be us, the player, who will get our hands on them thanks to this power.
It will also be an opportunity to meet the ancestors of well-known characters such as the family Weasley. the official blog from PlayStation says we may encounter “a Weasley…or two”. This clearly refers to twins and it is probably the two redheads from Gryffindor that we see in the trailer.
These are the only famous characters from the Harry Potter universe that we have spotted. Maybe other wizarding families like the Black, Malfoy or even Potter will be present in the game through ancestors.
