Hogwarts Legacy crushes this iconic license, a historic record

Hogwarts Legacy has just dethroned a franchise known to all, which allows it to make history. It had been several years since anyone had succeeded.

Hogwarts Legacy clearly marked the year 2023, itself rich in big releases. It must be said that a game in the Harry Potter universe was destined to be a certain success. It did not fail to attract an audience of all ages, including people who are not necessarily used to playing. Its sales figures are therefore logically significant, and for once, it is even more than one could imagine. For good reason, it surpassed a famous license in 2023, putting an end to a supremacy that lasted several years.

Hogwarts Legacy, stronger than FIFA?

Let’s put the cursor on the United Kingdom, and analyze the figures. There, Hogwarts Legacy has sold more than 12 million physical copies. Unsurprisingly, it was the PS5 version that sold the best, followed by the PS4 edition, and the Nintendo Switch edition. This is not particularly surprising, in the sense that it was the one on PlayStation 5 that was released first. Yes, several months separated the arrival of the game on the new Sony console and the old one, which is not insignificant.

Either way, it’s an impressive score, and it makes it the UK’s best-selling game of 2023, in terms of physical sales. For a long time, it was the FIFA franchise (now EA FC) which occupied this place. One of the only times it was dethroned was in 2013 because of GTA 5. It then crushed the competition for 10 years, before Hogwarts Legacy came onto the scene. So, we can say it without getting too wet, it’s historic. One thing is certain, it’s not likely to happen again anytime soon.

A great success in the USA

This is not the first time that Hogwarts Legacy has created a surprise. In November 2023, in the USA, it put a speed to Call of Duty Modern Warfare III in the ranking of physical and digital sales. Normally, it is rather cult licenses like those belonging to Rockstar Games that manage to accomplish such a feat. But nothing is impossible for Avalanche Software’s production, and it demonstrates it well. We still imagine that Christmas must have helped boost sales.

We could even go so far as to say that it was strategic. The Switch edition was rolled out in November, right at the time when we start making gifts for the family. So, although there is a big gap between it and the PS5 version, its impact was undoubtedly significant. That said, Hogwarts Legacy on Big N’s machine was not as unanimous. The title suffered from numerous technical problems upon its arrival. Some of them have normally been corrected with the addition of a big update.
