As with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the royal event will be an opportunity for families and communities across the country to come together and celebrate.

This is a unique moment for Britain, said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “In recognition of this historic event, I am pleased to announce an additional UK-wide bank holiday next year.”

The 73-year-old Charles ascended the throne with the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8th. It is not uncommon for several months to elapse between the accession to the throne and the coronation. Reasons are the mourning period and the necessary preparations for the elaborate ceremony.
