- In the canton of Ticino, holiday return traffic has led to a long traffic jam in front of the southern portal of the Gotthard road tunnel.
- This had grown to nine kilometers between Faido and Airolo later on Monday afternoon.
- Traffic steadily decreased in the evening.
The loss of time was up to one hour and 20 minutes, but is currently around 20 minutes to overcome the two-kilometer traffic jam, as the Touring Club Switzerland announced in the short message service Twitter.
Winter and ski holidaymakers also encountered traffic obstructions on the roads from the Valais, from the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden.
In addition, return travelers had to be patient at the car loading stations. At times, the waiting time was two and a half hours on the Furka in Oberwald (VS), on the Lötschberg in Goppenstein (VS) and on the Vereina in Sagliains (GR) half an hour each.
The Federal Roads Office expects the high return traffic to continue until Sunday. In most cantons, the Christmas holidays will last until next weekend.
