  • In the canton of Ticino, holiday return traffic has led to a long traffic jam in front of the southern portal of the Gotthard road tunnel.
  • This had grown to nine kilometers between Faido and Airolo later on Monday afternoon.
  • The traffic jam cleared up late in the evening.

The loss of time was up to an hour and 20 minutes at times, but towards the evening the traffic jam gradually cleared.

On the last day off, winter and ski vacationers also encountered traffic obstructions on the roads from the Valais, the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden.

In addition, return travelers had to be patient at the car loading stations. At times, the waiting time was two and a half hours on the Furka in Oberwald (VS), on the Lötschberg in Goppenstein (VS) and on the Vereina in Sagliains (GR) half an hour each.

Legend:

Drivers had to be patient. The time lost was around one hour and 15 minutes.

SRF/BRK News

The Federal Roads Office expects the high return traffic to continue until Sunday. In most cantons, the Christmas holidays will last until next weekend.
