A group of holidaymakers order a few tapas at a simple beach bar in Mallorca and are amazed at the high bill. Six croquettes for an impressive 22 euros.
If you want to eat well in Mallorca, you have to dig deep into your pockets. The word has now gotten around, and as a tourist you expect it. But a group of holidaymakers had not expected that they would be served a hefty bill even in a simple beach bar.
22 euros for six croquettes: tables were simple and “not very clean”
“We sat at a simple stand that offered lots of delicacies on a large grill and all sorts of things from the sea,” one of the tourists told the “Mallorca newspaper. The tables were simple and “not very clean”. A portion of seafood paella was offered on a blackboard for twelve euros, which indicated a normal price structure.
At the end came the hefty bill. The beach bar charged 156 euros for a few tapas. “A portion with six croquettes cost 22 euros,” the “Mallorcazeitung” quoted the outraged tourist as saying.
Mallorca is becoming more and more expensive – now the accommodation tax is set to rise further
Things will soon become even more expensive for tourists on Mallorca: Prime Minister Marga Prohens has announced that the overnight stay tax will be increased during the summer months of 2025 in order to counteract mass tourism.
This means that hundreds of thousands of Germans will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the high season if they want to treat themselves to a holiday on the popular Balearic island.
