Holidays in Germany: these are the most beautiful campsites in Lower Saxony

Camping holidays in their own country have been very popular not only since Corona – even if you can now travel to many European countries again. In a new series, FOCUS Online presents the most beautiful campsites in every federal state: today Lower Saxony.

1st campsite on the North Sea beach, Dornumersiel

Set up your tents between dikes and sand directly at the Unesco World Heritage Site Wadden Sea – you can do that here at this campsite in Dornumersiel in Germany's far north. If you want to spend a quiet and natural vacation, this is the right place for you. Watch the tides every day, explore the Wadden Sea or the dikes on guided hikes or just relax in a beach chair and enjoy the sea – all of this is possible here.

Despite the tranquility, the campsite is not far from the shot: The center of the village of Dornum with its restaurants and shops as well as the cutter harbor are within walking distance. The camping site itself, a meadow area with small drainage ditches, can accommodate 300 motorhomes and around 60 tents. Holidaymakers can spend the night without their own equipment, but also in the so-called North Sea carts or pipo cars, which are recreated and comfortably furnished in old circus cars – including a wooden veranda in front of the entrance.

A plus point of the campsite: If the North Sea is too cold, you can go swimming in the heated seawater pool.

  • Info and prices: Stand 8.50 – 10.50 euros, adults 11.50 euros, children (3-15 years) 9 euros per night; Pipo wagon for two people for three nights 235 euros, North Sea cart for two people 195 euros for three nights; www.pincamp.de/campingplaetze/camping-am-nordseestrand

2. Südsee Camp, Wietzendorf, Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony

South Sea feeling in the middle of the Lüneburg Heath – that is what the approximately 80-hectare South Sea Camp in Wietzendorf near Soltau conveys. This is a huge adventure village that makes families with children happy in particular. Because everything revolves around fun and action: there is not just a swimming lake with a sandy beach, but an entire indoor pool with wave pool, water slide and flow channel.

But that's not all: a mini golf course, a high ropes course, a skater park, sports fields, trampolines, beach volleyball and even a riding stable ensure that no family member really gets bored. If you like it a little quieter, you can explore the beautiful surrounding heathland by bike or on foot.

There are 726 parking spaces for holidaymakers with mobile homes or caravans on the site, but also numerous comfortably furnished wooden houses in Swedish style with space for the whole family.

  • Info and prices: Stand 34-59.30 euros, adults 6.50 euros, children from 2-8 years 5 euros, up to 17 years 5.50 euros per night, holiday homes from 111 euros per night including three hours of free admission to the water park; www.pincamp.de/campingplaetze/suedsee-camp

3. Alfsee holiday and adventure park, Rieste, Osnabrücker Land

The Alfsee holiday and adventure park lives up to its name, because families with children don't have to worry about boredom. This camping park in the Osnabrück region offers a lake with a bathing beach, playgrounds, go-kart track and water ski facility as well as children's entertainment, ranging from handicrafts to children's disco and clown shows.

A specialty of these parks, which has a total of 375 caravan parking spaces, is the Germanenland: a separate area with numerous pretty rental chalets and a spacious swimming pool and wellness complex that was built in the style of a Germanic village. There is also a supermarket on the premises as well as a café and restaurant, a snack bar and a bistro.

4. Camping Neuharlingersiel, North Sea coast in Lower Saxony

This beautiful campsite is located directly on the East Frisian North Sea coast in the 1000-person community of Neuharlingersiel. It is open all year round, offers 1,100 parking spaces for motorhomes, 300 tent spaces and rental caravans and is located directly on the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

The place itself is a health resort or Thalasso North Sea spa. Campers come via a footpath directly to the adjacent public spa and health center "Badeerk", which offers special treatments, massages, an indoor pool and a beach sauna. At the Funny Beach directly in front of the campsite there is, among other things, beach volleyball and basketball as well as a water feature for the little ones and lots of colorful beach chairs to relax.

5. Insel-Camping Borkum, North Sea

If you want to go on holiday in the middle of the North Sea or in the Wadden Sea, you can take the ferry from Emden to the island of Borkum, which is about 20 kilometers off the coast. With 31 square kilometers it is the largest and also the westernmost East Frisian island and offers vacationers wonderfully beautiful sandy beaches – either to the open North Sea or on the southwestern flank of the island to the mainland.

The campsite itself is located in the town of Borkum, just under 1.5 kilometers from the beach, but offers 220 spacious parking spaces between 80 and 110 square meters. In addition to the fitness room and sauna for adults, there are also many employment opportunities for children, such as an adventure playground, a play tent and a mini club. The most beautiful thing about Borkum are the nature experiences like the mud flats, which you can explore on hikes or the seal banks on the reef.
