Holidays in the mountains: Expert reveals beautiful wellness hotels in Austria

Hotel tester recommends: Holidays in the mountains: three wonderful wellness hotels in Austria

The lockdown was in place for months – now the desire to travel is great. For those who want to treat themselves to a little break and some wellness in Austria, travel expert Andrea Labonte has put together her three personal hotel tips.

1. A touch of the Far East in the Naturhotel Forsthofgut, Leogang, Austria

In Leogang, Austria, the signs are pointing to a new beginning: Much has changed since the pandemic. And the ritual place of power on the edge of the stony sea in the Salzburger Land will inspire you with even more exotic spa experiences this summer. For example, the forest spa was expanded to 5700 square meters and now scores with a large organic swimming lake and Finnish lake sauna.

In addition, an infinity outdoor pool (32 degrees) and a 42 degree warm onsen pool with onsen washing area are among the hotel’s new spa innovations. In total there are now five different pools to dive into. And the sauna world also offers variety with various sweat rooms such as the “Leoganger Stadlsauna” (90 degrees) and the “Waldnebel” steam bath. The nice thing about the location of the hotel: It is surrounded by a huge garden with its own game reserve.

A paradise for little explorers is also the large children’s farm with a forest playground and the nature workshop with a painter’s studio. The hotel’s offer to spend a night in the great outdoors is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Guests can pitch their tent directly behind the Minigut, count the falling stars and let the rising sun wake them up in the morning.

Also new in the Pinzgauer Hideaway: the Japanese lake restaurant Mizūmi. Here the Japanese sushi chef combines Japanese culinary art with local products in the open show kitchen. Absolutely worth seeing and tasting!

  • Info and prices: One night in a “double room Kuschelnest” from 190 euros per person. More information under www.forsthofgut.at

2. A.Time with a view in the Hochkönigin Mountain Resort, Maria Alm, Salzburger Land

In the Hochkönigin Mountain Resort in the Salzburg region, it smells of freedom and adventure. The hotel is a good starting point for all mountain enthusiasts. Because with the Hochkönig Card you can use the six modern cable cars in the region free of charge and get a little closer to your personal happiness on the summit. The Bürglalmbahn Dienten, for example, takes guests to the picturesque hiking area around the Bürglalm at 1620 meters above sea level. And the Gabühelbahn to the popular family hiking area around Klingspitz and Hundstein.

The Karbachalm cable car leads up to the Schneeberg hiking area. At the end of the ascent, idyllic hiking trails and Toni’s alpine playground beckon as a reward for all little day trippers. Cyclists can challenge themselves around the Hochkönig with more than 20 mountain and e-bike tours. If you are looking for an adrenaline rush not on the saddle but on the runners, you should visit the Biberg summer toboggan run.

But not only the nature of the Salzburger Land, also the 2000 square meter Panorama Sky Spa of the Hochkönigin makes the hearts of many guests beat faster. There are a total of four pools and eight saunas, including an event sauna.

Letting go, reducing stress and relaxing muscles – this is what the yoga and Qi Gong exercises that the Hochkönigin’s sports professionals offer every week are aimed at. The 17 x 5 meter long infinity outdoor pool also offers relaxing moments with a view.

My tip: Be sure to enjoy an “Alpine stone massage” and then enjoy deep relaxation in one of the various quiet niches in the green or on both levels of the Nature Spa, which is open to visitors aged 16 and over.

  • Info and prices: One night in the “Double Cozy Room” from 160 euros per person. More information under www.hochkoenigin.com

3. Adler Inn Tyrol Mountain Resort: Attack climbers!

For all adventurers, summiteers and explorers: the world in the mountains is slowly awakening and with it our senses. Finally again. After months of deep sleep caused by corona, we stand wide awake this summer on the 2762 m high Rastkogel, reverently amazed at the picture that the rising sun paints in the sky over the mountain peaks. A natural spectacle that remains unforgettable.

Just like the following sunrise breakfast on the Geiselalm. A sunrise tour with the Stock family is just one of the memorable experiences that guests at the Adler Inn Tyrol Mountain Resort experience up close. Five times a week, the hosts go on forays through nature – whether for forest bathing, herb hikes or baking bread.

Many a path promises a welcome summer cooling. Because around the Adler Inn Tyrol Mountain Resort there are not only imposing peaks and blooming alpine meadows, but also thundering waterfalls. One of these sensational natural spectacles is the screw waterfall, to which the experienced hiking guide Paul is happy to accompany guests. The Schleier waterfalls near the Bichlalm are also a worthwhile excursion destination during a stay at the Adler Inn Tyrol Mountain Resort, especially on hot summer days.

The 2000 square meter mountain spa with its 14 sweat, relaxation and bathing areas offers pure relaxation. Both a panoramic indoor pool and a year-round heated outdoor brine whirlpool are part of the wellness hotel’s aquatic infrastructure. The salty water and the view of the majestic Hintertux glacier contribute to relaxation. Just like the large selection of water beds, cozy bunks and comfortable loungers on which guests can relax after a swim or a sauna.

Whether in the fresh air area, in the Relax Lodge stone pine or in the floating room, the hotel offers numerous retreats to switch off. And the sauna landscape also provides variety with a Finnish panorama sauna (90 degrees), a textile stone pine sauna (50 degrees) and a herbal steam bath (45 degrees). Incidentally, after the sauna, you can stroll under the waterfall adventure trail.
