Anticipation for Hollow Knight: Silksong has surged since its announcement nearly six years ago, with fans eager for updates on its release. Despite a delay revealed in May 2023, recent social media activity from Team Cherry has sparked speculation about an upcoming announcement. A whimsical cake image shared by a team member has led to discussions about a possible alternate reality game, though confirmation remains elusive. As the gaming community awaits news, the need for clearer communication from Team Cherry is evident.
Will 2025 Be the Year We Finally See Hollow Knight: Silksong?
The anticipation surrounding Hollow Knight: Silksong has been building for almost six years since Team Cherry first announced this sequel featuring the character Hornet. Back then, few could have predicted the lengthy wait we would endure. Over the years, the number of platforms for the game’s release has expanded, likely increasing the project’s scope and ambition. Delivering a successful sequel is a challenging task, as fans expect enhancements and richer content with each installment. The last significant update was in May 2023, when Matthew Griffin revealed that the release was delayed from its original schedule for the first half of that year. Since that announcement, there has been little news apart from the option to wishlist the game on the Xbox platform… until recently.
Hints and Speculations: What’s Brewing in the Hollow Knight Universe?
The intrigue began just before the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 last Thursday. On the eve of this event, William Pellen from Team Cherry made some intriguing changes to his social media profile, adopting the handle @everydruidwaswr, along with a new display name, little bomey. He also shared a whimsical image of a chocolate cake slice accompanied by a message hinting at something significant arriving the next day. This led fans to speculate that an ARG (alternate reality game) was in play, a clever marketing strategy often used to engage communities.
A quick reverse image search revealed the cake to be a Brooklyn Blackout Cake. Interestingly, the first result for this dessert directs to a recipe published by Rick Martinez, notably dated April 2, 2024, which coincidentally aligns with the anticipated Nintendo Direct focusing on the Switch 2 and its game lineup. Some fans on Reddit pointed out that on the same date, the band Imagine Dragons teased their song Eyes Closed, with a tweet that read, “Eyes Closed. TOMORROW,” connecting back to the world of Hollow Knight.
As the discussion around the cake recipe gained momentum, several comments appeared under it, allegedly from members of the Team Cherry. One user, posing as William Pellen, humorously rated the cake a “4/2,” nodding to the upcoming Direct date. Another comment from REAL_TEAM_CHERRY praised the cake as “the *Nintendo Direct* of cakes,” while composer Christopher Larkin chimed in with a playful remark, “This cake is silkstastic! Shaw/10.” If these were indeed from the team, they left little room for ambiguity.
However, this past Saturday, YouTuber fireb0rn, known for his insights on the franchise, reported that Matthew “Leth” Griffin clarified it was not an ARG after all. But the series of events feels too orchestrated to be mere coincidence. Griffin also commented on social media, affirming, “Yes, the game is real, progressing and will release,” which, albeit vague, reassures fans that development is ongoing.
Unfortunately, this leaves many questions unanswered regarding the game’s progress. A more transparent communication strategy from Team Cherry would be beneficial, especially after such a lengthy wait. The community deserves to be updated on the status of development. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming Nintendo Direct, whether it teases new content or not. Patience is key as we await more news.
If you haven’t yet added the original Hollow Knight to your collection, the Switch version is currently available for €25.40 on Amazon.
