On Friday, Google announced via a blog post that it was ending support for some of its home products, including Nest Secure, Dropcam and Works. If you own one of these products, here’s what it means to you.
Nest Secure refers to Google’s alarm system which included Nest Guard, Nest Detect, Nest Tag and worked with the Nest app. The system launched in 2017 and was discontinued just three years later in October 2020. As of April 8, 2024, support for Nest Secure will end and it will no longer be accessible via the app. Until then, users will still be able to use all current features, but Google encourages them to upgrade to another system before then.
To ensure a smooth transition, Google is offering current users $200 to use on the Google Store.
Equipment difficult to maintain
The Dropcam, the Google Nest Wi-Fi camera, was launched by Google almost 10 years ago. Google says early hardware is difficult to maintain and therefore will end support on April 8, 2024. Dropcam will work until that date, but after that users won’t be able to use it , because it will no longer work and will be inaccessible on the application. If users want to keep their video history, Google advises them to download it before then.
Google is taking the opportunity to promote the Nest Cam instead. Nest Aware subscribers will get a new indoor wired Nest Cam for free. Other Dropcam users will get a 50% discount on the same camera.
Finally, Google is also removing Works with Nest from the circuit, a program that allowed third-party products to connect to Nest products, from September 29, 2023. After this date, connections will no longer work and users will no longer have access to them. says Google.
In the coming months, Google announces that it will share a script editor allowing users to create home automations.
