Homeschooling is supposed to protect us as a society from the coronavirus – but as it has now been shown, the dangers involved are very different: For example, strangers recently put nude photos into circulation on a learning platform in Bavaria.

Homeschooling has presented many parents with unexpected challenges: connection problems, technical difficulties or the struggle with nasty math problems are currently the order of the day for millions of families. But as if that weren't enough, hackers are now also making mischief in digital teaching. Naked photos were now circulating on the learning platform of a primary school in Bavaria – and landed on the monitor of an eight-year-old. As a parent, how can you keep your nerve?

Kicked out teacher

According to media reports, an unknown person in Mainburg, Lower Bavaria, had gained access to the primary school's learning platform, the teacher quickly removed from the chat room and published nude photos. An eight-year-old was shown pictures of a naked man while she was online on the platform. The Kripo is now investigating the sexual abuse of children.

How exactly the stranger got onto the platform is still unclear, but it is possible that he or she has used the access data – in this case it could be that the person has a connection to students, their parents or school staff. The school responded to the incident by installing a security update. Of course, this cannot prevent, for example, bored older siblings from secretly dialing into the lessons of their little brothers or sisters and causing unrest …

Apparently not an isolated case

“After all,” Mainburg is not alone with this experience: a similar incident occurred at another elementary school in Lower Bavaria. Here, offensive videos relating to students and their parents were played on a learning platform. In terms of security, homeschooling in this country apparently still needs some optimization – in view of these stories, it is certainly not enough for “sufficient”.
