Honor Magic V: a technical sheet and images reveal a promising smartphone

The Chinese manufacturer Honor is preparing to unveil its very first folding smartphone on January 10, 2022. But, as often, a lot of information is filtering out a few days in advance.

Folding smartphones are slowly democratizing, and a good part of the industry leaders have decided to place themselves in this innovative segment, in particular against Samsung and its Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold. This is the case of Honor, which will officially unveil its Magic V on January 10, 2022 in China. However, it is still unclear whether it is intended for the European and North American markets. The company had managed to keep an aura of mystery around the device, but, three days before the event, we know a lot more.

The MySmartPrice site has indeed published renderings of the model, as well as part of its technical sheet. From these images, we can see that the Magic V, which adopts a format similar to that of the Galaxy Fold, should be available in three colors: black, white (slightly streaked) and orange. The opportunity to observe that its dorsal photo island is particularly impressive.

the leaker Ishan Agarwal, often well informed, shared a large part of the technical sheet. However, this information should be taken with a grain of salt.

With its dimensions of 160.4 x 72.7 x 14.3 mm when folded, the smartphone would prove to be a little thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 3 (16 mm thick). Good news, given that this is one of the most troublesome aspects of this type of model. Unfolded, it would display proportions of 160.4 x 141.1 x 6.7 mm. With 293 g on the scale, it would be one of the (very) heavy weights on the market.

Attractive screens

According to Agarwal, we should be entitled to an external 6.45-inch OLED screen curved on one side, displaying 2560 x 1080 pixels and refreshed up to 120 Hz. This would therefore be good news, since would be part of the trend of current high-end screens. The internal screen, still Oled, would offer a size of 7.9 inches (2272 x 1984 pixels), with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. This lower rate would probably save energy on a daily basis.

Under these screens, we should find the brand new SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The chip in question would work in conjunction with 12 GB of RAM and 258/512 GB of storage. The set would run on Android 12. We can therefore expect a very fluid experience and advanced video games.

The autonomy would be provided by a battery of 4750 mAh, compatible with a fast charge to 66 W. A very interesting data, because these models are not yet champions in terms of endurance.

An ambitious photo setup

For the photo, we should be entitled to a triple 50 Mpx sensor with a wide-angle (f / 1.9), an ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.2), but also an “improved spectrum” module. (f / 2.0). It will probably be necessary to wait for the official presentation to know more, because no additional information was communicated. At the front, we will find a 42 Mpx wide-angle for selfies. The Magic V is therefore a particularly ambitious smartphone on this point, able to arouse our curiosity.
