Honor Magic4 Pro: opponents for Samsung and Xiaomi?

After Honor acted independently of Huawei and was again allowed to sell Android smartphones with normal Google equipment in this country, the brand is on the up. Honor 50 and Honor 50 Lite made the start. For the Mobile World Congress 2022 (February 28 to March 3, Barcelona) it will be much more exclusive and expensive: With the Magic4 Pro, which costs 1,099 euros, Honor is making claims in the upper class. The slimmed-down version without “Pro” is available from 899 euros.

Honor Magic4 Pro with 120 Hertz OLED

The OLED display has a diagonal of 6.81 inches.

The Honor Magic4 Pro is 74.7 millimeters (mm) wide, 163.6 mm long and 9.2 mm thin without a camera. This is remarkable considering the large screen diagonal of 6.81 inches. This is made possible by a very narrow edge.

Honor Magic4 Pro

Without a camera, the Honor Magic4 Pro is 9.2 mm thin.

The OLED display is curved towards the edges. The screen’s black level, contrast and viewing angles should leave nothing to be desired. The sharpness is also great at 2848×1312 pixels (460 ppi). The Pro offers a little more than the Magic4, which is also very sharp at 430 ppi. The maximum screen change frequency is a fast 120 Hertz, which ensures a very smooth display. Thanks to LTPO technology, the frequency can be reduced to 1 Hertz to save energy. For secure face recognition, the 16 MP front camera is supported by a depth sensor, which the Magic4 lacks, and the Pro also has a particularly large ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The back is under glass. The “PU” variant with a plastic back is lighter at 209 to 215 grams and slightly thinner and certainly reacts less to fingerprints. It is orange and unfortunately not intended for the local market. In addition, only the Pro is really waterproof according to IP68 and should survive half-hour dives at a depth of 1.5 meters. The “normal” Magic4 has to be content with IP54.

Honor Magic4 Pro with 100x zoom

Honor Magic4 Pro

Overall, Honor has gathered 164 megapixels on the back.

The main cameras (f/1.8) of the Magic4 Pro and Magic4 have a resolution of 50 megapixels (MP). There is also an equally high-resolution ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2) with a viewing angle of 122 degrees. Only the Pro has a telephoto camera (f/3.5) with 3.5x optical zoom and 64 MP resolution. A maximum of 100x hybrid zoom is possible. “Computational photography” also uses the data from the lenses that are actually not used for digital optimization. As a special feature, you can take photos in normal quality while recording a video. Usually they are visibly worse. Videos are saved by ambitious filmmakers as 10-bit log 4K at 60 fps. The log format is commonly used in professional filming to produce videos in HDR. The Magic4 has a 5x optical zoom, but the sensor offers less digital latitude at 8MP. This gives the Magic4 a maximum magnification of 50x. Usually, however, the image quality deteriorates significantly in these extreme zoom cases. In everyday life, smaller steps are more important. That’s why COMPUTER BILD checks the photo quality at four times the magnification in the mobile phone camera test. In addition to the optical lenses, the Magics also have a laser autofocus and a flicker sensor.

Honor Magic4 Pro: processor and memory

Honor Magic4 Pro

Honor does not make any compromises when it comes to the processor. With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, one of the currently most powerful mobile chips ensures speed. The Magic4 Pro is available with 8 or 12 gigabytes of RAM (LPDDR5) and 256 or 512 gigabytes of device memory. For Germany, Honor limits itself to the 8/256 GB version.
