In the early morning hours of September 24, Roger Federer was on the tennis court for the last time as a professional. On Sunday in Zurich he was honored for his outstanding career.

One should be careful with superlatives. With this, however, you are guaranteed not to go wrong: Roger Federer is the best athlete that Switzerland has ever had. The list of his milestones alone would fill a book. He was Laureus World Sportsman of the Year five times – more often than anyone else – and at the most prestigious tournament in Wimbledon he is the record winner with eight triumphs. With these successes, you would also sit at the top of the pantheon in the sports superpower USA. But Federer carried the Swiss flag out into the wide world.

In contrast to the proverbial prophet, the achievements of the 41-year-old from Basel were also duly recognized at home. With seven individual awards, Federer is of course the most decorated athlete of the year. There are also two awards in the team category – in 2008 for the double Olympic victory with Stan Wawrinka and in 2014 for the triumph in the Davis Cup – as well as at the “Sports Awards” 2020, when the traditional choice of athletes fell victim to the corona pandemic as the best Swiss athlete of 70 years.

Favorite of the sports world

But Federer represents more than numbers and records. He enchanted the sports fans and even those who otherwise do not know much about tennis with his elegance, his impeccable demeanor and his always friendly nature Voted “Fan Favorite” an incredible 18 times in a row in 2020 and honored as the fairest player by its competitors 13 times.

So it’s only logical that he should be honored again in Switzerland for his outstanding career.
