Will the cultural venues reopen in mid-May? Officially, this prospect, promised on March 31 by Emmanuel Macron during his televised address, is not called into question. In less than a month, a priori between May 12 and May 17, the public could therefore find their way back to cinemas, museums, theaters, theaters. But under what conditions, according to what criteria and health protocols, with what gauges? Behind the long-awaited schedule of reopening, after almost six months of closure (not counting the first confinement of spring 2020), a multitude of questions remain unanswered.

Meetings by sector have resumed in recent days at the Ministry of Culture. A priori, all cultural places should reopen their doors at the same time, but in a graduated manner. As the health situation is different from one territory to another, the option of regionalizing the gauges is currently under discussion. Three stages have been established for several weeks, which first provide for a gauge established at 35%, then at 65%, then at 100%, but the criteria allowing to pass from one stage to another are still not defined. . Will it be the level of circulation of the virus, the pressure on hospital services, the vaccination rate, or all three? In any event, a period of three to four weeks is envisaged to switch from one gauge to another.

To find the public and restart programming, representatives of the cultural world wish at all costs to avoid the devastating “stop and go” experienced for a year. They also hope for a relaxation of the curfew, determining for evening sessions at the cinema or at the show.

“Get clear answers”

And what about the summer festivals? The mayor of Avignon, Cécile Helle, believes “Urgent to be able to obtain from the ministry clear and precise answers on the health protocols, the conditions of reception and the financial aid allowing the cultural actors to face the losses of ticket office according to the gauges which will be applied”. Last unknown: what fate will be reserved for the test concert projects mentioned for several months?
