Over the past few months, we’ve been sharing clips from Horizon Call of the Mountain, a PlayStation VR2 adventure launching February 22. Today, we wanted to take the time to get to know Ryas, the character you’ll play as you embark on this new adventure in the world of Horizon.
The Carja Heliaum still bears the scars of the bloody Red Raids, a brutal campaign of attacks and ritual sacrifices inflicted by the Carja on neighboring tribes. These raids, which cost countless lives, ended when the Mad Sun King Jiran was overthrown by his son Avad.
The aftermath of Jiran’s rule divided the Carja tribe: supporters of the king’s deposition remained in Heliaume, while soldiers loyal to their slain leader broke through Brunante Citadel and reformed as Carjas shade.
Horizon Call of the Mountain’s protagonist, Ryas, was one such soldier. Having played a key role in the kidnapping of young Prince Itamen from his home in Meridian, Ryas seeks to redeem himself and regain his honor.
After allowing himself to be captured and imprisoned by the Carjas, Ryas escaped execution. Now he has been recruited by the Sun King Avad and Marad the Blameless. An outstanding climber, archer and hunter, Ryas must investigate a new threat in exchange for his freedom. Ben McCaw, Narrative Director of Studio Guerrilla, gave us some additional details: “Ryas ended up on the wrong side for good reasons. His family was broken up, and he ended up in jail. This story tells how he tries to get out of it. »
A perilous adventure awaits Ryas, and although he is the only one who can accomplish his task, he will be well surrounded. Along the way, players will meet new characters and reunite with others, though his past affects those relationships, Ben explains. “Having fought alongside the Shadow Carjas, Ryas’ relationship with these characters is conflicted to say the least. He must make concessions and redeem himself if he hopes to be accepted. »
Take the example of Hami, a loyal soldier of the Heliaum carja who escaped the horrors of the Red Raids thanks to her assignment as a border guard. She herself is unable to forgive or forget the atrocities caused by the Shadow Carjas, having lost many friends and comrades in this conflict. Characterized by her quick wit and explosive temper, Hami can’t stand having to escort Ryas. His hatred for what Ryas stands for is just one of the many challenges he will face.
With Horizon Call of the Mountain, players will be able to experience the world of Horizon from a new perspective, thanks to Ryas, a fascinating new protagonist, and the PlayStation VR2 headset. Thanks to haptic feedback, intelligent eye tracking and an ultra-wide field of view, you will be totally immersed and Call of the Mountain will immerse you directly beyond the most spectacular peaks of Heliaume.
Ben McCaw explains: “We took the Horizon experience and adapted it entirely to VR. And for that, we felt we needed a new protagonist. A peerless climber, hunter and explorer, Ryas offers the perfect vantage point over the awe-inspiring landscapes and dangerous wilderness of Horizon. »
