After talking to us about his new generation clouds and his waterwing last week, Horizon Forbidden West and its extension Burning Shores are back with a new article from PlayStation-Blog. This focuses on the scenario of the DLCswhich will focus on the tribe of Quens. Be careful, there will be slight spoilers on the main adventure.
Part of the faction indeed lives in the Blazing Coast and we will therefore be able to meet several of the allies ofAlvaas I’Admiral Gerrit And Seykaa navy which will have an essential role in the extension and will be our partner for a good part of the DLCs. aloy will obviously collaborate with them to explore San Francisco and find a solution to the environmental cataclysms that threaten the region. Their colony named Fleet’s End has also been shown in images and video.
In Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, Aloy will evolve in the ruins of Los Angeles. Over the last millennium, the metropolis has been ravaged by earthquakes and tectonic movements. The result: a dangerous archipelago populated by deadly machines. On one of these islands, a Quen colony is struggling to survive.

The Quens in detail
Aloy encountered the tribe in Horizon Forbidden West, while seeking one of Gaia’s subordinate functions. “The Quens are sailors who live beyond the Pacific Ocean,” says Annie Kitain, head writer at Guerrilla. “Unlike other tribes Aloy has encountered, Quen society was built around their ability to use focus, which allows them to access ancient data. This technological advantage allowed them to take over the other tribes of their native land, the Great Delta. The focus also shaped their culture. »
“Knowledge of the past has allowed the Quens to build a remarkable empire. But unlike the Oseram tribe, for example, who owe their technological prowess to their creativity, the Quens rely solely on knowledge gained through focus. As such, a large part of their culture is centered around protecting the few focuses they possess. Control of the information to which these devices allow access is also an integral part of their social model. »
The Diviners therefore play an essential role in the tribe. They are highly esteemed, since only they can use focus to analyze data. Their job is to find and record ancient knowledge that could benefit the empire, but also to make sure outsiders don’t get their hands on it.
However, the Quen’s idea of the Old World is skewed. In Horizon Forbidden West, the player discovers that, unlike Aloy’s Focus, the Quens’ devices can no longer decipher data past a certain point in the story. Because of this restriction, they misinterpreted many of the data they found. Over time, they’ve come to revere a pantheon of old-world paragons, made up of 21st-century CEOs and business moguls.
The Oriental Expedition
Just like the prohibited West, the Quen territory has suffered environmental collapse for twenty years. The Quens, desperate for a solution, came to believe that the data from the ancient city of San Francisco might be the key to saving their land.
“Unfortunately the Expedition had to face many difficulties,” says Annie. “Early on, half the fleet disappeared in a violent storm. Then, after the remaining ships managed to dock in San Francisco, their search stalled and the remaining members did not experience the triumphant return they had hoped for. Things were looking bad… Until Aloy arrived. »
On her mission to recover Demeter from the ruins of an old research facility in Faro, Aloy encounters a Diviner from the Expedition. “Brilliant and curious, Alva is the first Quen that Aloy can count among her friends,” according to Annie. “The two travelers bonded over their respective explorations of the ruins of the ancient world, but also their discoveries about the past. During their adventures, Aloy helped Alva get her hands on a wealth of data that could help her people. For her part, Alva helped Aloy complete her mission and even joined Aloy’s team in the base. At the end of Forbidden West, Alva chooses to stay with a few soldiers, while the rest of the Expedition sets sail to return to the Greater Delta. Thanks to Aloy, she sees the world differently. She is therefore determined to do everything possible to help the latter face the new threat to Earth. »
Direction the Flaming Coast
When we asked her what was important to know about the tribe before delving into Burning Shores, Annie replied, “I think it’s important to keep in mind that we know a lot less about the Quens than on any other tribe. In Forbidden West, we could only scratch the surface. So get ready to learn a whole lot more about them, as well as how their strict hierarchy affects the new characters you’ll meet! »
The Quens that landed on the Flaming Coast have been there for a while. Although survival is not obvious, they have managed to establish an impressive colony that you will have a lot of fun exploring. You will meet characters like Admiral Gerrit. “The player will encounter him early in the story,” Annie explains. “The Admiral is a highly decorated commander in the Quen navy. He is also the leader of this group. It is up to him to keep the colony running despite the circumstances. »
In the illustrations for Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, we find Aloy accompanied by a new friend, identifiable by her quen outfit. This is Seyka. “We can’t wait to introduce you to Seyka! It is an ambitious navy that has stepped up to help its people survive. Since this is her partner for the entire DLC, Aloy will spend a lot of time with her throughout the story. She will have to rely on his help in many situations, which does not often happen to her. Seyka is confident, caring, and rather tough. She’s unlike any of Aloy’s friends and she plays a vital role in the next chapter of her adventure. »
