In German, the August full moon is traditionally called the harvest moon, since the grain harvest is or was usually brought in at this time of year. The Algonquin, an indigenous people of today’s Canada, christened it sturgeon moon, because in August the waters in their homeland were particularly rich in sturgeon – the breeding season of the fish usually falls in spring and summer. Like most moon names, the name for the August moon in the Germanic culture is based on agriculture, while in America it is inspired by nature.
