People, as far as we can go, differ greatly in terms of their sensitivity: while some people perceive even the smallest signals that allow them to sense the moods of those around them, others don’t even notice that the other person is not is offended when it openly shouts at them. And while some people quickly feel overwhelmed when faced with stress and high demands, others remain cool as chocolate ice cream and cope with the situation without batting an eyelid.
Sensitivity has multiple dimensions and being particularly sensitive can have both advantages and disadvantages. In general, sensitive people perceive their environment and fellow human beings more intensively and in more detail. What happens around them usually affects and moves them more deeply than is the case with more insensitive people. In this respect, sensitive people tend to be more compassionate and appear more considerate, but they are also often easier to shock and sometimes appear thin-skinned and sensitive.
Seen this way, sensitivity or high sensitivity is neither a strength nor a weakness – it is just a quality that we have or don’t have. How we deal with our characteristics, that is, whether we use them for ourselves and our lives or whether we struggle with them and constantly stumble over them, is again in our hands.
