WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?

1988, Abby and Gretchen are best friends. Ever since a night gone wrong, Gretchen has been acting weird. Abby begins to think her friend is possessed by the devil. But can their friendship survive possession? Is she as indestructible as they think she is?

My Best Friend’s Exorcism, written by Grady Hendrix and Christopher Landon and directed by Damon Thomas.

THE EXORCIST VERSION… TEEN

On screen, the spirit and aesthetics of the eighties are more popular than ever. The success of the series Stranger Things is necessarily for something. My Best Friend’s Exorcism is part of this movement which revives the eighties, through synth-pop hits, eccentric haircuts and clothes in flashy colors.

Adapted from the novel for teenagers written by Grady Hendrix and published in 2016, this horror film mixes the emblematic works of this decade, from Breakfast Club to Sixteen Candles for Sam, passing by a classic of the genre: The Exorcist. What begins as a simple tale of learning turns into a tale of possession with plenty of humor and thrills.

Prime Video

My Best Friend’s Exorcism makes fun of the clichés present in exorcism films, such as jets of vomit or demonic voices, to better divert them. This shift in tone, we owe it to the original novel of course, but also to Christopher Landon, director of the fun Freaky and Happy Birthdead, who co-wrote the screenplay.

Carried by Elsie Fisher – who appeared in the last Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix – and Amiah Miller, the film is a good surprise that opens the Halloween movie season.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is available on Prime Video.
