The Croque-mitaine will be the next adaptation of a work by Stephen King on the screen. But a scene from the film would be so frightening that it had to be reworked for the next theatrical release of the feature film, scheduled for May 31 with us.
The Boogeyman is a short story from 1973 by Stephen King, a short story that has not ceased to scare its readers since its release. With the horror film of the same name, British director Rob Savage is now trying to bring the horror of reading to the big screen, which he more than succeeded according to his own statements in an interview with Empire. Indeed, as German news site Kino reports, the terrified screams of moviegoers during test screenings prompted a reworking of the film.
The first time the creature is seen, the audience screamed so loudly and then immediately started talking with their neighbors and gossiping, that they completely missed the lines [de dialogues] following. So we had to recut it and add 45 seconds of padding, just so they didn’t miss any vital information.
But the director is ultimately delighted with the reactions: “I’m a huge jump scares fan. That’s the most rewarding part, when you see this happening with an audience and you can feel them taking the bait, and then you feel the jolt coming.”
After films where he enjoyed complete artistic freedom like Host (2020) and DASHCAM (2022), Rob Savage seems to have experienced a smooth transition to the studio production system. “I was afraid of becoming a horror story of compromise myself, but every frame of this movie is the movie I wanted to make”, he proudly declared.
STEPHEN KING APPROVES
In the same interview, Rob Savage also said that none other than horror master Stephen King enjoyed the film starring Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian in particular. A special session was indeed organized for the 75-year-old writer in his own cinema, which he left satisfied, as explained by Rob Savage.
We rented his cinema and screened the film for him in Maine. I didn’t go because I was terrified of him doing ‘The Shining’ stuff and he absolutely hates it. But apparently he jumped up numerous times and then sent this lovely, lovely message to everyone who worked on the film. And the next morning I get an email that says ‘From Stephen King’. And he said, ‘Robert, I’m still thinking about your movie the next morning.’
The king has spoken: bring us that famous Bogeyman.
