The ice hockey world mourns the loss of Adam Johnson. The former NHL professional has died after a horrific injury. The drama occurs in the British Hockey Cup in the 33rd minute of the game between his Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers. Johnson – formerly active in the NHL and the DEL with the Augsburg Panthers – is unfortunately hit by an opponent in the worst possible way. The blade of the skate slits his throat. This is reported by British media such as the BBC. The British Elite League postponed all games originally scheduled for this Sunday due to the news of his death.
“Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible human being with his whole life ahead of him,” wrote the shocked Nottingham Panthers on X, formerly Twitter. The match was canceled and the 8,000 fans in Sheffield had to leave the arena. The club also thanked everyone “who rushed to help Adam last night under the most difficult circumstances.”
“The ice hockey family mourns the loss of Adam Johnson,” said the Augsburg Panthers. “Our thoughts are with Adam’s girlfriend, his family and teammates, as well as all the hockey fans and officials who had to witness the terrible accident.” Augsburg announced a “moment of silence in memory of Adam Johnson” for the upcoming home game against Düsseldorfer EG on Tuesday.

Bleeding heavily, the crack reportedly got back on his feet and wanted to go back to his team’s bench. He then collapsed while his teammates and paramedics rushed to his aid. Johnson was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The 29-year-old is said to have been revived on the ice beforehand. The silent cracks on the ice formed a circle around him, after which a screen was set up to block out the horrific scenes. The game was canceled and, according to media reports, the fans present were traumatized after the incident.
“It is with a broken heart that the Elite Ice Hockey League must now confirm that Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson has sadly passed away following a freak accident in the game between the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on Saturday,” the club said in its statement Steelers. “Thoughts and condolences go out to Adam’s family, friends and teammates at this incredibly sad and difficult time.” Johnson’s mother Kari wrote on Facebook: “I lost half my heart today.”
Johnson only moved to Nottingham this season and was immediately one of the top performers there. In seven games he collected seven scorer points. He had moved to the island from Augsburg. He also put up decent numbers in the DEL, scoring seven times in 45 games and setting up 15 goals. In the NHL he only made 13 appearances in two seasons for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
