Horror series for SC Freiburg
Stressed FC Bayern eats all hopes
By Tobias Nordmann
Next top game for FC Bayern and again the competition is hoping for a mistake: But the Munich team is not doing the rest of the Bundesliga a favor. First with power, then with difficulty, the SC Freiburg is moved out of the way. Nevertheless, the club manages remarkable things.
Who would Bayern be if they didn’t always have the best answer ready? Well, this question can be sorted at the bottom of the discard pile of unprocessed things for the time being. Because contrary to all the hopes of the competition that this club from Munich, which has been so dominant for years, would finally stumble in a top game, the team of coach Julian Nagelsmann simply eats up all these longings. But at least one thing is different than usual on this Saturday afternoon: SC Freiburg, third in the table (!), Is not dwarfed. Many other opponents do the same. Most recently Bayer Leverkusen, which was disgraced as a highly bet challenger with 5: 1. But this sports club from Freiburg is fighting back. And if the unyielding men of Christian Streich had scored the connecting gate a little earlier …
Gates: 1: 0 Goretzka (30th), 2: 0 Lewandowski (75th), 2: 1 Haberer (90th + 3)
Munich: Neuer – Süle, Upamecano, Hernandez (84th Nianzou), Davies – Kimmich, Goretzka (71st Tolisso) – Coman (66th Gnabry), Thomas Müller (71st Musiala), Leroy Sane (84th Choupo-Moting) – Lewandowski . – Trainer: Nail man
Freiburg: Flekken – Gulde (80th Demirovic), Lienhart, Schlotterbeck – Kübler (80th Sildillia), Maximilian Eggestein (73rd Haberer), Höfler, Günter – Höler, Jeong (59th Schade), Grifo. – Trainer: Prank
Referee: Sascha Stegemann (Niederkassel)
Viewers: 75,000 (sold out)
Well, the dear subjunctive. Nothing is more superfluous in football. The 1: 2 in the 1: 2 defeat in the sold out Allianz Arena (2G for the visitors) only fell in the third minute of stoppage time. Although there were still another 180 seconds to play, the passionate Breisgauer couldn’t find their way to, let alone into the Munich goal. However, the guests had grabbed the record champion in a spectacular final phase at the sleeper. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to defuse two great opportunities for the sports club. And he did what Manuel Neuer does. With very strong parades. It’s always good when the titan takes on his role as a titan. And so Christian Streich was a little annoyed. If, yes, if his team went to 1: 2 a little earlier …
Well, the dear subjunctive. Nothing is. Now there would probably have been very different interpretations as to whether a division of points in this duel would have been deserved. Sorry, we’re already drifting back into the what-if. FC Bayern won this game. Because he can rely on his premium offensive always being able to ignite the unique turbo and thus overwhelm any opponent. The power of dominance against Freiburg has developed much less often than against many other opponents in recent weeks (except for the inexplicable cup disaster at Borussia Mönchengladbach), but when the rockets Alphonso Davies, Leroy Sané or Kingsley Coman pick up the pace , then there is hardly any proven opposite. Not nationally anyway. But not internationally either.
Simply overwhelmed for a moment
And so both Munich goals were created after a combination game as fast as an arrow. The 1-0 win by the outstanding national player Leon Goretzka fell through the middle, including Thomas Müller. And the second goal, which of course super striker Robert Lewandowski had to score because he always scores against SC Freiburg (among other things, he had set Gerd Müller’s all-time 40-goal record in Breisgau last season), Davies and Sané had theirs Opponents are briefly overwhelmed with lightning-fast actions. These geniuses of the individuals made the difference on this Saturday in an intense and exciting duel. “That makes us special that we are top manned in all positions,” said Goretzka about the individual class in the Munich squad.
There isn’t really much to add. An example: While the always fighting and always dangerous center forward Lucas Höler, who some media already want to write about Hansi Flick in the DFB team, what Coach Streich displeases (“Take care of Bayern, Dortmund and the others – and leave our boys alone “), missed a great chance early in the game after a mistake by Joshua Kimmich because he forgave, Goretzka used a similar situation to take the lead (30th). There were moments when Streich struggled with this difference in quality. But in the end he knew how to assess the realities on the pitch very seriously. As always. “We can’t do more than we’ve done.”
A tough message to the Bayern bosses
And that was quite a lot, as they had acknowledged at FC Bayern. “We played against a good team,” said Goretzka after this show of strength. That was necessary in order not to go back to the international break with an exhausting negative experience. That was the case in October, when FC Bayern was at Eintracht Frankfurt – more precisely: failed by goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (1: 2). And coach Nagelsmann confessed: “I’m glad that the goal came so late.”
Indeed, amazing things had happened on the sidelines in the long minutes before the final whistle. Nagelsmann paced up and down (okay, that’s not surprising), but kept pointing at his watch after Janik Haberer’s goal (substitute Tanguy Nianzou didn’t look good). The fact that a Munich coach eagerly longs for the final whistle against the sports club really doesn’t happen that often. But as remarkably courageous as the guests’ performance was, their balance sheet in the Allianz Arena reads just as bad: In addition to three draws, there are now 19 bankruptcies in the league chronicle in 22 games. A horror.
Incidentally, the record champions’ bosses also experienced this a few days after Halloween. A few minutes after the game had kicked off, the fans had unrolled a poster with a “blood” criticism of club boss Oliver Kahn and President Herbert Hainer. “For money we wash everything clean,” read the huge banner. Under the lettering, the powerful could be seen next to a washing machine with the label “FCB AG” washing blood-smeared clothes. In Kahn’s left hand there was a suitcase full of money with the inscription “You can rely on us”. FC Bayern supporters have been protesting for a long time against their club’s business relationships with the unjust state of Qatar. In the host country of the 2022 World Cup, the people of Munich regularly complete their training camp in winter. In addition, the airline Qatar Airways has been a major sponsor for several years.
