With the increase in Covid-19 contaminations and the high heat, hospitals already in a delicate situation could again be overloaded. But the doctor is confident: “We have the state of emergency, the discomfort in the hospital, and this very significant heat wave. It is the conjunction of several things. In itself, the arrival of Omicron BA .5 is of only very moderate concern.”
The arrival of this Omicron BA.5 “should not change the general policy which is that France must learn to live with the variants”, considers the doctor. “On the other hand”, he nuances, “it must encourage on the one hand to keep the tools to monitor what is happening, then to vaccinate with a fourth dose, the oldest and most fragile.”
“A very unstable situation” in Martinique
The question of the vaccine is central for Jean-François Delfraissy in Martinique, where the Covid-19 epidemic has accelerated in recent days. “We are around 47% of vaccination, therefore, the penetration of the same Omicron variant in the Paris region or in Martinique has completely different consequences”, details the president of the Scientific Council.
Caregivers in Martinique “are currently quite overwhelmed, with a very unstable situation which could switch to a greater number of severe forms and therefore the use of resuscitation beds”, indicates the doctor, who underlines that this phenomenon is not to be the agenda in mainland France, but that it could eventually reach Guadeloupe.
