Host Pépita victim of racism and sexism in a revolting TV archive

This Tuesday, March 30, 2021, the program “Canap 95” of TMC proposed to review television sequences dating from 1995. We see in particular the host of “Pyramid” Pépita undergo misogynoir, discrimination at the intersection of racism and misogyny …

The show Sofa 95, broadcast on TMC this Tuesday, March 30, 2021 and presented by Étienne Carbonnier, was an opportunity for telespectateurs.ice.s to dive back into the flagship shows of 1995. But also, to see how racism and sexism are omnipresent on our small screens.

The misogynoir in the show “Pyramide”

In a sequence compiling certain passages of the show Pyramid, at the time broadcast on Antenne 2, we can see the star host Pépita being mistreated by her colleagues. For example, as Pépita holds a postcard with a photo of a chimpanzee in her hands, the voiceover of the show exclaims “Oh, it’s you in the picture Pépit ‘on the postcard” in front of hilarious spectators. Worse yet, another person on the board retorts: “It’s by dint of eating bananas, that’s what it does.” Pépita is compared to an ape and dehumanized.

And that’s not all. While she brings a board game bearing the image of the show to a candidate, Patrice Laffont asks him to sit with the latter. If she refuses, for lack of space, the facilitator and the candidate insist: “Oh yes, on my knees, you have to dare!” The remarks on her outfits and her physique are also going well: “You know she is plump with her lemon! (…) I can have the same at home in white.”

These reflections are, neither more nor less, misogynist, this specific discrimination at the crossroads of sexism and racism. Fetishism, hypersexualization, dehumanization, a series of degrading qualifiers, comparisons to animals… These insulting words, often unpunished, reflect what black women experience on a daily basis.

Discriminatory remarks … also present on TMC

If this sequence on TMC has the merit of highlighting this scourge, the TV channel is still used to discriminatory sequences. We remember the racist remarks made by Nicolas Sarkozy, in September 2020, in the show Daily. At the beginning of March 2021, it was the psychoanalyst Élisabeth Roudinesco who shocked by making transphobic remarks of great violence. She also guest on the show Daily, she had spoken to it “epidemic” by referring to transgender people.
