House of the Dragon: End After Season 4? George RR Martin talks Game of Thrones spin-off schedule

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON

The dance of the dragons hasn’t even started in “House of the Dragon” when George RR Martin already announces the end of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off after season 4.

  • The story of “House of the Dragon” is not as extensive as that of “Game of Thrones”.
  • The Dance of the Dragons is just picking up steam at the end of Season 1, but now it seems to be coming to an end.

Although based on the book “Fire and Blood” by “Game of Thrones” author George RR Martin, “House of the Dragon” does not cover every aspect of the centuries-spanning history of the Targaryens. “House of the Dragon” will not end where “Game of Thrones” began, but much earlier.

At the heart of the story is the Dance of the Dragons, the war for the crown that almost brought down House Targaryen. Season 1 of the series currently provides all the necessary information needed to understand the coming war, but we’re racing through the story and almost every episode has a big time jump.

Now Season 1 is coming to an end, King Viserys is dead and the war can begin. This means fewer time jumps from now on, but they cannot be completely avoided. George RR Martin commented on the time jumps in his blog and believes that a very good solution has been found here.

While he bemoans the fact that shows are limited to 10 episodes per season these days and notes that we would certainly have seen more from Harwin Kraft or Laena Velaryon in additional episodes, he’s still very pleased with HBO’s end result.

According to Martin’s estimation, a total of 4 seasons with 10 episodes each will be necessary in order to be able to completely cover the dance of the dragons. Since HBO extended the series by a second season after just one episode due to its great success, an early end is fortunately not to be expected.

Although HBO could be interested in further seasons, several “Game of Thrones” spin-offs are in the works at the same time, so saying goodbye to “House of the Dragon” shouldn’t be that difficult. In addition, this time HBO could make sure to produce a Westeros series with a successful and fan-appreciated ending after going too far off track with “Game of Thrones”.

Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” will probably not await us until 2024, perhaps again at the same time as “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, because a second season has already been ordered from Amazon’s fantasy spectacle. The Middle-earth series is even set to get five seasons, so good news for fantasy fans!
