House of the Dragon on OCS: why Rhaenyra and Daenerys Targaryen are different according to actress Milly Alcock

Game of Thrones had Daenerys and House of the Dragon had Rhaenyra. If fans find many similarities between the two Targaryennes, actress Milly Alcock, who plays Rhaenyra, thinks they are quite different.

First spin-off of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon signs the return of the universe created by George RR Martin on the television. Fans are there to find the Targaryen family and follow their personal and political adventures, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Centered on the Targaryen dynasty, this spin-off series is set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

The prequel series focuses on recounting the beginnings of the fall of the Targaryen dynasty with the wars of succession to access the Iron Throne until a civil war called “The Dance of the Dragons”. One of the heroines of the series is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is reminiscent of Daenerys Targaryen, who was one of the heroines of Game of Thrones.

Rhaenyra and Daenerys Targaryen, same fight?

Embodied by Milly Alcock in his youth and then Emma d’Arcy in the rest of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen is the daughter of King Viserys Targaryen and his heir apparent. The princess would like to be the first woman to sit on the Iron Throne and she will give herself the means to do so.

Coming from the same dynasty and having similar ambitions, Rhaenyra is much compared to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) by the fans, and this from the first episode when the princess launches the line “Dracarys”.

But for the actress who plays her in the first episodes, the comparison stops there. In an interview for the Huffington PostMilly Alcock talks about the differences between her character and Daenerys Targaryen:

“We have the same wig and we both say Dracarys, but other than that I don’t feel like our two characters really look alike. I understand why people see similarities: they’re two Targaryens claiming the Iron Throne and are challenged for it. But the way they see the world, and the tools they use to get what they want are fundamentally different in my opinion.”

The actress insists that the two young women have different characters and a vision of the world of their own, due to their social status: “Rhaenyra was born with privileges that Daenerys does not have.”

You should know that Rhaenyra lives in a time when the Targaryens are in power and where they enjoy an extremely comfortable position. The young woman is a princess who has keys in hand to guide her destiny. This is not the case of Daenerys, 200 years later, who is the only survivor of her dynasty, who has nothing left and who must rebuild everything. For her part, Rhaenyra has different motivations:

“I’m not even sure Rhaenyra really wants to sit on the Iron Throne. I think she mostly wants change, and validation from her father who has become her only family. The Iron Throne is the symbol of their bond and his love for her. So I think it’s a bit more complex than just wanting power.”

Even if the two young women have different characters and life paths, the fact remains that they are part of the same family – Rhaenyra is her great-great-great-great-great-great-great- mother ! – and that they both aspire to find a place for themselves in a male environment and that they do everything possible to achieve their goal.
