House of the Dragon: Open your eyes in the intro of episode 9 – that’s what’s hidden behind Aemond Targaryen’s eye patch

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON

In “House of the Dragon” episode 7, Aemond Targaryen lost his left eye. Since then he has worn an eye patch. But behind this there is more than just a scar. The intro of episode 9 gives a clue.

The intro of “House of the Dragon” Episode 9 very subtly reveals what lies behind Aemond’s eye patch. The short sequence before each episode shows the family tree of the Targaryen dynasty. However, this was slightly changed for the penultimate episode.

If you don’t look closely, you’ll probably miss this little detail. A shiny sapphire now adorns the family tree. This represents none other than Aemond Targaryen.

After Lucerys Velaryon gouged out his uncle’s eye in an argument, Aemond wears an eye patch. However, the flap is not only intended to hide the ugly scar, but also a shining sapphire that sits in place of his eye.

His new eye becomes his personal seal, which he wears proudly. It is the symbol of his strength and the terrible deeds he will commit as a gifted warrior. Aemond only shows the gem when he wants to showcase his power to opponents.

A sapphire for a life

After losing his eye, Aemond is consumed by a desire for revenge. He swallows this for six years until an opportunity presents itself. The decision to remove his eyepatch shows Aemond’s willingness to reignite the feud with Lucerys.

The scene shown teases the first attack on which Aemond the clan murderer will carry out in the name of the Greens.

Another short clip shows Rhaenyra Targaryen receiving Otto Hightower as the crowned queen. The Greens will then send Aemond to Storm’s End to request Borros Boratheons’ support for Aegon II Targaryen. However, the Blacks plan the same for Rhaenyra and send Lucerys as a messenger.

The two relatives will inevitably meet and so it comes to pass that Aemond will kill his nephew Lucerys. This murder escalates the situation between the Greens and Blacks and the “Dance of the Dragons” begins.

In the second season of “House of the Dragon” Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen will take revenge for this act. A son for a son.
