Already in episode 1 of “House of the Dragon” we are presented with a prophecy in “Game of Thrones” style. But this prediction no longer causes the viewers quite as much headaches as it caused Azor Ahai. Because we have already seen its fulfillment – at least almost.

When King Viserys appoints his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir to the throne, he tells her in private conversation about a dream that led Aegon I to conquer Westeros and which has since been passed down from ruler to ruler.

Thus, Aegon the Conqueror dreamed that a long night would fall over Westeros, which would plunge the land into utter darkness. What lurks in the dark will destroy all life. Only if a Targaryen sat on the Iron Throne could this long winter be survived and the realm united. Aegon I called this dream “The Song of Ice and Fire”.

It should be ringing for “Game of Thrones” fans now at the latest. The series of books on which the series is based is titled A Song of Ice and Fire. The series ends in a fight against the White Walkers who started the Long Night over Westeros. Although Daenerys Targaryen ultimately plays an important role in the fight against the undead, the prophecy is not entirely fulfilled.

Although the White Walkers are defeated, no Targaryen, neither Daenerys nor Jon Snow, whose real name is Aegon Targaryen, is sitting on the Iron Throne at the time of victory. Although Daenerys declares herself queen, Cersei Lannister is still the official queen of the Seven Kingdoms. So the series makers of HotD either made a small mistake or rely on inaccurate fulfillment of prophecies.

In the Inside the Episode special, showrunner Miguel Sapochnik reveals that the prophecy is a major driver for Viserys to finally find a worthy heir or heir. Therefore he appoints Rhaenyra as his heir to the throne.

Nobody knew at the time that the Long Night would take place some 170 years later. The prophecy is lost, most likely already in the Dance of the Dragons, but no later than the coronation of Robert Baratheon. Neither Daenerys nor her older brother Viserys III. know about the threat from the far north.
