At the time of House of the Dragon, the dragons were the rulers of the skies and an undisputed power in Westeros. The lizard beings led House Targaryen to power, but they also overthrew them.
In the HBO series, we experience for the first time a time when humans lived with dragons. We get to see up to 17 different lizard creatures. All with their own personality and individual appearance. Similar to humans, dragons will experience stories in the world of the seven kingdoms.
In “Game of Thrones” the fire-breathing creatures had become legends, but in “House of the Dragon” there is an infrastructure built around the great creatures.
Huge riding saddles, the dragon pit where the Targaryens kept their mounts captive, and a monk-like order of Wardens that protected the prized dragons.
We’ve put together all the relevant dragons for you, some of which you’ve already seen in the series.
Syrax
dragon rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen
Syrax was the yellow-scaled dragon lady of Rhaenyra Targaryen. She was named after a goddess of Valyria. The Targaryen Princess first rode her dragon at the age of seven.
Caraxes – The bloodworm
dragon rider: Aemon Targaryen, then Daemon Targaryen
Caraxes was a battle-hardened dragon. Its blood-red scales and long snake-like neck gave it the nickname Bloodworm. The dragon was used in numerous battles before the Dance of the Dragons, but at Daemon Targaryen’s side he defeated the greatest.
Vhagar
dragon rider: Visenya Targaryen, Baelon Targaryen, Laena Velaryon and Aemond Targaryen
Vhagar was one of the three dragons used by Aegon the Conqueror to conquer Westeros. It belonged to Visenya Targaryen, sister-consort of the first Targaryen king. At the time of “House of the Dragon”, Vhagar was the largest and oldest living dragon. The dragon lady’s scales were bronze with spots of green and blue.
After the death of her first mistress, Vhagar was not ridden for nearly 30 years, until Baelor Targaryen laid claim to her. After its death, the dragon-loving rider Laena Targaryen took over the animal. When Laena had complications giving birth to her third child, the Vhagar ordered her and the unborn child to be cremated. Subsequently, King Viserys I’s second-born son, Aemond Targaryen, took over the dragon.
sea smoke
dragon rider: Laenor Velaryon
Sea Smoke was a magnificent off-white dragon. He was named after his dragon rider, Laenor Velaryon. In the Battle of the Stepping Stones, the beast fought alongside its rider alongside Daemon Targaryen.
Meleys – The Red Queen
dragon rider: Rhaenys Velaryon
Meleys had a red scale dress and pink wings. Before Rhaenys Velaryon became the beast’s rider, Alyssa Targaryen was owned by Meleys.
Morghul
Morghul was a hatchling bonded to the daughter of Aegon II and Helaena, Princess Jaehaera Targaryen. When the dragon died in King’s Landing, Jaehaera was not present, having fled the city years earlier after Rhaenyra Targaryen’s invasion. Morghul was never ridden and spent his entire life in chains.
storm cloud
Stormcloud was a young dragon born at the beginning of Aegon III’s “Dance of the Dragons”. was ridden.
During the war, Rhaenyra sent Aegon III. and his brother Viserys II to Pentos to bring them to safety there. However, their ship was attacked. Aegon III only made it back to Drachenstein thanks to his dragon. Stormcloud died as a result of this rescue operation because, despite severe injuries, he had exhausted himself to bring his rider to safety.
After this experience, Aegon III flew. never again. He even hated dragons from the destruction they caused during the war.
Tyraxes
Tyraxes hatched from a dragon egg given to Prince Gottfrid Valeryon at birth by his grandfather, King Viserys I Targaryen. After Rhaenyra had already lost her two eldest sons in battle, she forbade Gottfrid to go into battle on his dragon.
Because of this, Tyraxes was used solely for transportation. It was therefore not possible for the kite to master long flight distances for a very long time. Because Tryaxes lived hidden and chained, never being used in combat, the dragon was never able to reach its full potential.
morning
Tomorrow was a dragon lady hatched late at the end of “Dance of the Dragons”. She had light pink scales, black horns and a black crest. Born so late, she was too young to serve in the war.
This made her one of only four other dragons to survive the confrontation. More importantly, she was the only dragon on the Targaryen side to survive. Morgen was never tested in combat, but she was a key liaison for the completion of the dance.
After the “Dance of the Dragons”, Morgen was imprisoned in the Dragon Pit for most of her life. As we know from “Game of Thrones”, the pretty dragon lady will also die, but we don’t know the details yet.
Even the readers of the books don’t know, because the second book in George RR Martin’s “Fire and Blood” book series is still in the writing phase. In the House of the Dragon series, we’ll probably see Morgen as baby dragons.
The new episodes of “House of the Dragon” appear every Monday on Sky Atlantic and the streaming provider WOW. Then we see the large, graceful animals again gliding through the air with gentle wings.
