House of the Dragon: This is the true meaning behind Alicent’s green dress – the green and the black explained

In the 5th episode of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon”, Alicent Hightower makes a spectacular appearance during the celebrations of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon.

Just as King Viserys I begins a speech in honor of his daughter, Alicent enters the hall. Her deep green dress draws everyone’s attention and is a clear message to her stepdaughter Rhaenyra. We explain to you what is so special about the dress and what the “black” and “green” are all about.

prehistory

King Viserys I Targaryen had a daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen, in his first marriage to his wife Aemma Arryn. She remained his only descendant with Aemma. When his wife gave birth to a son, she and the child died.

Daemon, the king’s brother, mocked the “Prince for a Day”, which angered Viserys. The enraged king unceremoniously appointed his daughter Rhaenyra as heir to the throne. A year later he married again. His young wife Alicent Hohenturm gave birth to three sons and a daughter. With the birth of the first son, Aegon II, his mother claimed the throne for her child.

However, Viserys did not want to change anything about his succession to the throne and wanted to keep his eldest daughter as his successor. This decision split House Targaryen into two factions, “The Greens” and “The Blacks”. The greens demanded that Aegon II Targaryen ascend the throne after the king’s demise, and the blacks demanded that the line of succession be maintained with Rhaenyra.

After the death of King Viserys, the Greens seized Rhaenyras’ claim to the throne and crowned Aegon II Targaryen as the new King of Westeros. The “Dance of the Dragons” flared up and the two parties offered a merciless war for the Iron Throne.

The Greens and the Blacks

In George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood, the terms “The Greens” and “The Blacks” come from a tournament held in honor of Viserys I and Alicent’s wedding anniversary. During the opening ceremony, Princess Rhaenyra wore a black and red dress, while the Queen wore a deep green dress.

This performance did not go unnoticed by the people. Henceforth it was customary to refer to oneself as the Greens as supporters of Alicent and as the Blacks as supporters of Rhaenyra.

“House of the Dragon” takes a different approach. In the series, Alicent first appeared in a green dress during Rhaenyra’s wedding to Laenor Velaryon. She used her dress as a declaration of war against Rhaenyra. She had learned from Kriston Kraut that Rhaenyra was sleeping with her bodyguard. But Rhaenyra swore to her friend that she was still a virgin.

Her father, Otto Hohenturm, also persuaded her that after her accession to the throne, Rhaenyra would kill Alicent’s children, Rhaenyra’s siblings. Both influenced her judgment of her former friend. As a sign of her resistance, she therefore used a green dress, because this color has a special meaning in her Hohenturm family, as Larys Kraft notes during Alicent’s appearance.

The black ones

The blacks support the claim to the throne of King Visery’s firstborn daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen. During the “Dance of the Dragons” the blacks were supported by 51 houses.
