In the last camera shot of the 5th episode of “House of the Dragon” we get a small allusion to a disturbing event that will happen in the future of the series. Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon’s wedding caused quite a stir and chaos after Kriston Kraut murdered Gottfrid Lonmund during the festival.

A dripping pool of blood testifies to this cruel deed. When all the guests left and the body was removed, Rhaenyra and Laenor were married in a small gathering not far from the crime scene. In grief and without having understood how this act could have happened.

In the last shot of the episode you can see the blood that hasn’t been removed yet and a rat feasting on it. What doesn’t become particularly relevant as a scene, however, could be a nod to something big. Because the blood and the rat are symbols for two characters that we will get to know in the coming episodes.

blood and cheese

The rat in this scene represents a Red Keep Pied Piper named Cheese. The blood represents a former City Guard soldier known only as Blood. The two together were hired by Daemon Targaryen to avenge the murder of his stepson, Lucerys Velaryon.

Shortly after the “Dance of the Dragons” began, Aemond Targrayen murdered Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys. Her new husband, Daemon, promised his wife to avenge her son’s murder. He hired blood and cheese to carry out his plan.

Cheese funneled blood into the Red Keep and guided it through the twisted passages beneath King’s Landing into the Tower of the Hand. They overpowered Alicent Hightower and killed her maids. With their hostage, they awaited the arrival of Alicent’s daughter and wife of Aegon II, Helaena. She visited her mother every evening with the children.

Cheese and blood overwhelmed the self-proclaimed king’s sister-wife and forced her to choose which of her two sons should die. At first, Helaena offered her own life, but when the rogue duo didn’t accept, she chose her youngest son, Maelor.

However, Blood did the opposite, killing six-year-old Crown Prince Jaehaerys instead. Without harming the others, Blood and Cheese fled King’s Landing with the boy’s head.

The Blood and Cheese assassination is by far one of the most gruesome crimes committed during the “Dance of the Dragons”. Halaena went insane after this attack and was afraid to take care of her other children.

This heinous act is reminiscent of numerous cowardly murders of children from “Game of Thrones”. As did Rickard Karstark’s murder of the Lannister children, Martyn and Willem. This had to die because Rickard wanted revenge on Jamie Lannister.

However, this terrible act lies hundreds of years in the future. But the assassination of blood and cheese could be shown soon. We’ll find out how it goes on in the upcoming episodes of the first season of “House of the Dragon”. The HBO series can be viewed in Germany on Sky Atlantic or the streaming provider Wow.
