Warning, spoilers. It is recommended that you have seen the first eight episodes of House of the Dragon before continuing to read this article.

The first season of House of the Dragon has already had its share of deaths but episode 8 is marked by the most moving death so far. This chapter, which however promised to be a fairly tense family reunion, allowed a prominent member of the Targaryen family to experience the last joyful moments. But at what cost ?

Increasingly ill, King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), breathed his last at the end of episode 8 after defending his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma d’Arcy) and after making a shock revelation to his wife Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). If his death was sad, it was not very surprising because of his state of health.

What disease did Viserys Targaryen suffer from?

Speculation was rife about the nature of Viserys’ illness and some fans were looking for any clues. We could see Viserys with cuts on his hands, made by the swords on the Iron Throne, but also see him go through episodes of dementia. But his illness was never named in the series.

House of the Dragon: 5 things to know about Paddy Considine, King Viserys I of the series

Today Paddy Considine revealed what illness Viserys was suffering from in an interview for Entertainment Weekly and it is a form of leprosy:

“He actually has a form of leprosy. His body is deteriorating, his bones are deteriorating. He’s not really old. He’s still a young man in there. He has, unfortunately, this thing that’s took over his body. It becomes a metaphor for the stature of you, and the stress and strain that puts on you, and what it does to you physically, what it does to you mentally.”

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract but also the eyes. And you could clearly see on Viserys’ face how much the disease affected him from episode to episode. His death will in any case have dramatic consequences for the royal family.
