“House of the Dragon” without Sky: All stream alternatives for the “Game of Thrones” prequel

• “House of the Dragon” has been on HBO since August 21, 2022 in the United States.
• In Germany, the “Game of Thrones” spin-off can be seen on Sky immediately after the US start.
• But even without a subscription to Sky or Wow, you can stream HotD – sometimes even for free!

“House of the Dragon” is one of the biggest series highlights of the year. It is therefore not surprising that the “Game of Thrones” prequel is also available internationally directly after the US broadcast on HBO and the stream release on HBO Max.

In Germany, the rights are again with Sky (here you can order directly from Wow), there you can see “House of the Dragon” always in the night from Sunday to Monday in the stream at Wow, i.e. directly after the US broadcast. Sky Atlantic and Sky Showcase also show the series in the linear program. Both in the stream and on the Sky channels, the original version and the German dubbed version are available from the start.

But not all Westeros fans have a Sky subscription or want to buy Wow. The price could play a role, but bad experiences with Sky are also a reason to look for alternative streaming options.

Funnily enough, Sky of all places offers you the opportunity to stream “House of the Dragon” for free and without a Sky subscription – at least the 1st episode. Netzwelt tells you what other options you have to see the “Game of Thrones” prequel without Sky in Germany.

HBO Max

The first alternative takes us straight to the source: HBO. The channel’s streaming service, HBO Max, has not yet started in Germany (and according to current developments, a start is rather questionable), but it is still possible to take out a subscription to HBO Max from Germany.

You definitely need a VPN service to bypass HBO Max’s country blocks. Then simply follow our guide, which applies to all available HBO Max services. After all, HBO Max is not only available in the USA, but also in the Netherlands, for example, where the subscription is significantly cheaper.

For 5.99 euros a month you get the basic subscription, the standard subscription for 2 euros more offers you better image quality and up to 30 downloads in the app. In the US, subscriptions only start at $9.99, so you’re better off with a subscription from the Netherlands.

You shouldn’t expect German sound here, but there is an English language version and subtitles, and the offer from the Netherlands differs only slightly from the US selection.

Amazon & iTunes

At this time, House of the Dragon is not yet available for digital purchase on Amazon and iTunes. That could change soon, after all, other HBO series such as “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld” actually ran on Sky in Germany, but could still be bought on Amazon and iTunes. Each episode should cost 2.99 euros here, so the whole season would be available for just under 30 euros.

With the subscription to HBO Max you drive cheaper, but buying from Amazon and iTunes would be a much less complicated alternative. In addition, German sound should also be available to you here.

Blu Ray

If you can be patient, you should be able to get “House of the Dragon” Season 1 on Blu-Ray at home as early as December 2022. In Great Britain, December 19th has already been confirmed as the release date, in Germany a timely start is likely.

If you decide to buy a Sky subscription, the Wow series subscription is the cheapest. The subscription costs 9.99 euros, it is 2 euros cheaper if you commit to 6 months right away. The last “House of the Dragon” episode will air in this country on October 24th, so you don’t really need Wow for more than three months.
