Houseflies: These natural home remedies work against the insects

Thanks to hum and buzz, houseflies are probably the most unpopular roommates. These natural home remedies keep the insect away.

Just ventilate briefly and there is a fly in the apartment. The insects outside are at least as annoying: you hardly want to enjoy your meal in a relaxed way, they are interested in circling the bigger picture. But that need not be. With these tips, flies stay away from your own four walls – without any chemical help.

Less flying thanks to proper hygiene

Basically, a clean home attracts insects much less than a dirty one. Especially dishes that have been waiting a long time to be washed off attract flies. If you have a certain basic hygiene, you can prevent a rush of flies. In addition, the dining table should be crumb-free and the organic waste should be disposed of promptly.

When ventilating, it makes sense to open two opposite windows, which creates a train. It keeps the flies from staying inside. It also makes sense to attach a mosquito net to windows or doors.

Vinegar insect trap

A proven trick to get rid of the big flies is a bowl filled with vinegar. This scares off the tormentors. It is best to position a few bowls near the front door and the windows. That scares off the insects.

You also kill two birds with one swatter: the houseflies are put off by the smell of vinegar, the small fruit flies are attracted. Vinegar mixed with a drop of washing-up liquid also serves as a trap for the smaller nerve saws.

These scents drive away the flies

Those who want to be more discreet about houseflies can help with various scents. Lavender is one of the smells that put off the little nerves. Simply distribute a few bags with an intense lavender smell at home, and the insects will find your rooms less attractive. Scented oils achieve the same effect.

Peppermint, basil and eucalyptus are other smells that houseflies don't like to smell. Place a fresh basil plant in the kitchen, peppermint on the balcony or strongly fragrant eucalyptus oil – and the flies think twice about getting in through the open window.

Natural and efficient: carnivorous plants

Carnivorous plants not only look beautiful, they are also very efficient when it comes to killing insects. If there are no concerns, a fly should die, consider this natural trap. The most famous houseplant of its kind is the Venus flytrap. If an insect sits on its opened catcher leaves, the plant encloses it – and then digests it. But also pitcher plants, pitcher plants and sundew like to satisfy their appetite with flies and Co.
