Household: Save on heating costs with the right tips

Constantly switching the heating off and on can cost money in the long run. These tips will help you save on heating bills.

In Central Europe, winter is not only long and cold. It is also expensive because almost 80 percent of energy costs are literally burned. With a few tips, it will be cozy and warm in your own four walls and still save costs.

In order to keep energy consumption low, every detail counts. Often it is only small measures or changes that are noticeable in the heating bill. Even one degree lower room temperature results in six percent lower costs. This not only protects the environment, but also your wallet.

The optimal room temperature

Many rooms are overheated. To save energy, it is completely sufficient if the living rooms are between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius and the bedrooms are between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius. Turning back the heating is the easiest tip to reduce energy costs.

Service the heating system

Investing in regular heating checks and maintenance is worthwhile. Only a well-functioning heating system provides pleasant warmth and helps to save money when heating.

Do not cover the radiator

Radiator covers may be useful as a visual enhancement, but cause up to five percent higher energy costs. Just like curtains or furniture that cover the radiator.

Vent the radiator

Before the heating season begins, the radiators should be routinely vented. In any case, ventilation must take place if the radiators remain cold despite the heating being switched on or a gurgling can be heard.

Use thermostat

Not estimating the desired temperature, but setting it precisely with the help of a thermostat helps save money.

Avoid drafts

Old windows are energy guzzlers and cause high energy costs. If there is a draft, you don't feel well and the heating is turned up higher. This is inevitably noticeable in the heating costs. Replacing the window is worthwhile and the investment costs are quickly amortized. In the meantime, the good old draft animal protects against energy loss.

Ventilate properly

Correct ventilation not only lowers energy costs, but also prevents mold growth. It is important not to tilt the windows in winter. Instead, rely on brief shock ventilation. So fresh air comes into the rooms, the walls do not cool down and the room warms up again quickly. Even on frosty days, it is advisable to ventilate briefly two to three times a day.

Different types of heating

Electric heaters are the biggest energy guzzlers that drive up heating bills.

Lower or turn off the heating

The night setback helps to reduce energy consumption. If you are absent for a longer period, the heating can be turned off.
