Every iron suffers from limescale build-up over time. How to properly clean the device? These are the most important tips.

If the iron is very calcified, it can lead to expensive repairs. In some cases a new purchase is even necessary. To avoid this, every household should ensure that the ironing device is regularly cleaned and limescale removed. These tips reveal what is important.

When is decalcification necessary?

In many cases, limescale deposits cannot be seen immediately from the outside. If steam escapes when ironing, which cannot be attributed to the laundry that is still damp, this can be an indication of calcification. If there are lime crumbs and white stains on ironed clothes, those affected should act quickly. Otherwise, damage to the iron and laundry can no longer be avoided.

These home remedies are great for cleaning the iron

Chemical cleaning agents are expensive to purchase. They also harm the environment due to their high dosage. Therefore, it is advisable to resort to home remedies. Vinegar and vinegar essence, which can be diluted with water for this purpose, are particularly suitable for this. Citric acid, on the other hand, should not be used by those affected. The all-purpose helper works effectively against limescale and is environmentally friendly, but it can damage the iron by forming crystalline deposits when it is heated.

This is how the limescale can be removed in every household

1. Mix equal parts of water and vinegar.

2. Fill the iron's water tank with the vinegar solution and set it to the highest possible temperature.

3. Use the steam function at regular intervals to distribute the cleaning agent evenly in the device.

4. Let the vinegar solution work for half an hour. Then select the highest temperature setting again and allow the remaining cleaning agent to evaporate over a sink.

5. Finally, fill the water tank with clear water and repeat the entire process without vinegar.
