Deep black laundry fades over time. These tips will help keep clothes their intense color.

Black wash fading is a known problem. So that it does not lose its color and remains black in the long term, it is important to use the right detergent and to treat the laundry correctly.

Basic information on washing black laundry

So that the garments stay black, they should not end up in the washing machine with colored or whites. It is also advisable to sort the black laundry according to material before cleaning, as different fabrics have to be treated differently. Turn the garments inside out before washing, this protects the visible side. After cleaning, the clothes should ideally hang freely in the fresh air. Anyone who would like to re-dye already faded black laundry can obtain the appropriate means and the necessary advice in the drugstore.

Wash with means available from your own household immediately

If you rely on inexpensive and immediately available resources from your own household, you should use vinegar to clean dark laundry. It has a cleaning effect and softens the fabric. A sip of vinegar in the fabric softener compartment also strengthens the colors of washed clothes. Alternatively, salt can be used as a detergent. When placed directly in the drum with the laundry, it helps to maintain the color of the clothes during the wash cycle.

Regular washing with conventional detergents

The purchase of conventional laundry detergents should be done with the utmost care. Not every product is suitable for cleaning dark clothes. Heavy-duty detergents, for example, are not recommended. Color detergents and detergents specially designed for black laundry are more suitable. It is also important not to put too much detergent in the dishwasher as this may discolour clothes. The correct temperature can generally be found on the labels on the clothing. In most cases, 30 to 40 degrees Celsius is ideal.
