The Turpin and Colleen Stan cases had hit the headlines. These houses of horror had greatly moved the public. But what happened to the defendants?
For years, eleven brothers and sisters lived through a real hell. Held captive within their own home by their own parents, two of the children had broken the silence during an interview for ABC: “It’s unimaginable to me that we had the worst case of child abuse, arguably the most terrible in California history, but weren’t able to provide them with their basic needs.” According to a prosecutor, them Turpin kids live in misery since they were freed from the grip of their parents : “They are in areas infected with crime. There is supposed to be money for their education but they don’t have access to it.”
On the side of both parents, Louise and David Turpin were sentenced in 2019 to life imprisonment with a 25-year security sentence. They had pleaded guilty to 14 charges including torture and forcible confinement. “I want to say I’m sorry, for everything I’ve done. I love my children…I pray for my children every day. I’m so sorry for all the wrong I’ve done. I love them more than you can imagine”said the mother during her trial. Unfortunately this sordid story also echoes the case named Colleen Stan. This 20-year-old young woman was kidnapped in May 1977 by Cameron and Janice Hooker. For seven years, she will be sequestered by the couple who use her as a sex slave.
The Victim and Stockholm Syndrome
The young woman will be locked up duringseven years, for 22 hours out of 24 in a wooden box, placed under the couple’s bed. Colleen suffered from Stockholm Syndrome following her abduction. Falling in love with her captor, she tries as best she can to recover from her trauma. As for Cameron Hooker, he was sentenced to 104 years in prison.
