Housing construction narrowly exceeds pre-crisis levels

The number of permits issued for housing construction fell by 1% over the September-November period compared to the previous three months, but remains above its pre-crisis level, as do housing starts, according to data released Wednesday by the government.

From December 2020 to November 2021, 470,000 housing units were authorized for construction, i.e. 70,200 more than in the previous twelve months (+ 17.5%).

Over the same period, it is estimated that 391,800 housing units were started, or 38,100 more (+ 10.8%) than during the previous twelve months, specified the Minister, residential housing having experienced the strongest growth, in front of pure individual dwellings.

But if we take as a point of comparison the twelve months preceding the first confinement (March 2019 February 2020), the number of authorized dwellings remains higher but to a lesser extent (+ 2.4%), as is the estimate of the number of housing started (+ 1%), it is added.
