How a flyer on a suspect’s windshield helped solve a 36-year-old feminicide

In Florida, a man was arrested thanks to the scheme organized by the police. Suspected of having killed a woman 36 years ago, the individual was the victim of a masterstroke by the investigators.

It’s quite a masterstroke on the part of the investigators. A 55-year-old man was arrested in the United States, specifically in the state of Mississippi, on January 26. Indeed, he fell into an ambush organized by police agents. And for good reason: the man is accused of the murder of his wife, 36 years ago. It is the office specializing in the cold cases that wanted to reopen this file, in December 2020. DNA analyzes were then ordered by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The objective was to match hair found at the crime scene.

Thus, according to the revelations of the media Oxygen, these new analyzes made it possible to isolate the DNA of three brothers. Comparisons were made to further the investigations. Thus only the DNA of the arrested fiftieth was isolated. To be able to confuse him, the investigators had to recover more recent DNA traces. But how to get them back without the suspect realizing he’s being watched. The suspect was then monitored by one of the investigators in July 2022. The latter notes that the individual is stirring a coffee with a straw. Neither one nor two, the policeman must recover this famous straw to collect his DNA. Investigators then set a trap for the man.

A scheme that worked

Thanks to the complicity of the restaurateur, the latter was to offer a free meal with the help of a leaflet. Investigators then placed the paper on the suspect’s windshield. On July 17, the individual, seduced by this proposal, went to the restaurant. The manager was able to recover the individual’s spoon and fork. The new tests then confirmed that the individual was indeed at the scene of the crime on February 9, 1987. Although he denies the facts, he was imprisoned pending trial.
